All uniformly bound in cloth of varying colour, with titles front and spine. All illustrated. 16mos. All volumes in generally very good condition, some are slightly pushed at spine ends…, most have a little dust marking to the upper text block edge, and some have a previous owner's name or inscription internally, else are neat, clean and tight. All in illustrated dust wrappers, shelf worn, rubbed and bumped at edges, a little scuffed at ends of lightly sunned spines; spine titles faded on some. Flags, Ships, Cacti and Birds are price clipped (Ships clumsily so). All reprints or revised editions issued between 1957 and 1965. Observer's Pocket books is a series of pocket-sized books published by Frederick Warne and covering topics such as hobbies, art, nature and history. The first in the series - British Birds - was published in 1937. The 99th title, the Observer's Book of Observer's Books was released in 1999 (by Peregrine Books) in a matching format. The series was rounded to 100 with the publication of Wayside and Woodland in 2003. Many of the titles have been revised, reprinted, updated and released in different dust wrappers over the years - it is estimated that there are some 800 variations - and have become collectible: the earlier numbers and rarer issues can be hard to find We have many books from the Observer Pocket Book series in stock and can offer generous discounts to those ordering more than one at a time. The mem bers and trustees of the institute believe that questions regarding health and safety are best resolved when scientists can examine and discuss issues as an independent body separate from the political pressures of individual countries and the economic concerns of individual companies. Frequently, meaningful assessment of the risk of a test substance is hindered by the inherent inconsistencies in the system. The development and refine ment of methods and systems to evaluate the safety of chemicals have evolved in a rapid and largely unplanned fashion. Attempts to improve the system have mainly been directed toward broad general concerns, with little attention being given to specific problems or issues. A failure to resolve these problems has frequently resulted in increased testing costs and complications in the assessment and extrapolation of the results to humans. Publicity surrounding toxicologic issues makes it difficult for governments to deal effectively with these problems. In response to these difficulties, ILSI has assembled highly qualified and renowned scientists from research institutes, universities, government, and industry with relevant scientific knowledge and expertise regarding the issues that complicate risk assessment procedures.
