Mendes Correa, Professor an der Universität Porto und dort Direktor am Institut für Anthropologie, bekannt durch zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen, waren lange Jahre einer der führenden Anthropologen Portugals. In diesem Werk zur Anthropologie Timors werden erstmals und bisher auch wohl einmalig in einem Buch sehr zahlreiche Fotografien aus dem 'Album Alvaro Fontoura' veröffentlicht. Dieses Album, um dessen Entstehungsgeschichte es viele offene Fragen gibt, enthält weit über 500 überwiegend anthropologische Aufnahmen aus allen Landesteilen und von allen Bevölkerungsgruppen des heutigen Ost-Timors. Es existieren nur zwei Exemplare von diesem Album, eines am Institut für Sozialwissenschaften an der Universität von Lissabon (dort ist es auch via Internet einsehbar), sowie ein zweites Exemplar im Besitz der Familie Fontoura. Die Existenz eines dritten Albums wird vermutet. Alvaro da Fontoura war einige Jahre Gouverneur von Timor, 1936-1940, aus dieser Zeit stammen auch die Fotos.
