Couverture rigide. ENGLISH : Angelo Costantini, known as MEZETIN La vie de Scaramouche Paris, Jules Bonnassies, 1876 195mm x 127mm 111 pp One of 11 copies numbered on China paper, this one no. 5, containing 2 states of the portrait of Scaramouche in black and in bistre. (Vicaire V, 798.) Superb full brown Jansenist morocco binding signed Champs, spine with 5 raised bands where author, title, city, and date are gilt, all edges gilt, guilloché headcaps, double gilt fillet running along the board edges; pastedowns adorned with a wide gilt dentelle composed of a broad festooned frieze: arcades of beaded garlands, tied on roundels, each sheltering a small hatched palmette; between the festoons hang, in alternation, pendant palmettes and rosettes dotted with points. Above runs a narrower register made up of a row of small upright palmettes, separated by a dotted fillet and framed by smooth double fillets. Binding and interior pages perfectly preserved. A short "facetious biography" of Tiberio Fiorilli (1608-1694), the great commedia dell'arte actor who passed into posterity under the name Scaramouche. The text is signed by his troupe-mate Angelo Costantini, himself an actor under the stage name Mezetin. First published in Paris in 1695, the work blends recollections, backstage anecdotes, and portraits of performance, and is a key source on the Italian troupe and theatrical life in seventeenth-century France. Costantini relates Scaramouche's art (the mask, lazzi, pantomime), his Parisian triumphs, his relations with Molière and the court, and multiplies exemplary scenes of the "grand buffoon." A narrative at once tender, funny, and highly partisan (more panegyric than cool biography). Famous passages notably describe Scaramouche's mute virtuosity, able to provoke bursts of laughter without uttering a word. A very handsome copy.
