Lintot [and ten others], 1727 [eighth edition]/ 1607. Folio, [488] pages, the text printed in two columns within ruled borders. Later full roan lettered in gilt on the spine; covers a little worn and bumped; binding cracked in two places (but firm); outer leaves tanned at the edges (from the leather turn-ins); small stain to the upper margin of a few leaves; a couple of tiny chips or tears at the edges; a few small marks and other signs of age and handling internally; a very good copy. The eighth edition of Cowell's 'The Interpreter', 'in this edition very much augmented and improved, by the addition of many thousand words, found in our histories, antiquities, cartularies, rolls, registers, and other manuscript records. With an appendix, containing two tables; one of the antient names of places in Great Britain, and the other of the antient surnames; both of them very necessary for the use of all such, as converse with antient deeds, charters, &c.'. The first edition of the dictionary 'advanced the opinion that the English monarchy was an absolute monarchy . the book was suppressed by a proclamation, in which it was denounced as insulting alike to king and commons, and was burnt by the common hangman (26 March 1610)' ('Dictionary of National Biography'). Cowell died soon afterwards, but new editions of his dictionary remained popular for more than a century. Provenance: Noel Augustin Webb (1865-1937), South Australian lawyer and magistrate.…

The magnum opus of the Cambridge Professor of Civil Law, 1594, and Master of Trinity, 1598. Prosecuted for exalting the King's Prerogative before the House of Commons by Sir Edward Coke, who had a hostile history with Cowell. He was saved from imprisonment by the interposition of James I but his book was burnt by order of the House. Several times reprinted & enlarged until 1727.…
