Zugleich gehört dieser Satz zum Gegenstand dieser Arbeit, insofern er nämlich eine besonders prägnante Formulierung eines Sachverhalts darstellt, von dem jede Dokumentationstätigkeit ihren Ausgang nehmen muß: daß effektives Handeln der Leitung durch ein Bild von der relevanten Umgebung bedarf. In diesem Sinne will die vorliegende Arbeit ein Bild zeichnen von dem, was Dokumentation ist und wie sie sich in den größeren Zusammenhang von Information und Kommunikation einordnet, welche Funktionen sie dort übernimmt oder übernehmen sollte. Bei diesem Vorhaben konnte es nicht darum gehen, Einzeluntersuchungen durchzuführen und neue Einzelergebnisse zu präsentieren. Das Ziel war vielmehr, den großen Zusammenhang darzustellen, in den die in der Literatur vorliegenden Ergebnisse, Ideen und Gedankengänge systematisch eingeordnet werden können. Die vorliegende Arbeit will einen umfassenden kritischen Überblick über wichtige Probleme der Dokumentation, insbesondere der sozialwissenschaftlichen Dokumentation, "vom höheren Standpunkt aus" geben. Sie kann insoweit auch als eine - allerdings recht anspruchsvolle - Einführung in die Dokumentation gelesen werden, wenn man bereit ist, fehlende Stücke insbesondere zur Dokumentationstechnik in der angegebenen Literatur nachzulesen. Auf Grund einer umfassenden Literaturübersicht wurde versucht, zu einer vertieften Betrachtungsweise vorzustoßen, Standpunkte der .herrschenden Meinung" zu prüfen und gegebenenfalls in Frage zu stellen, wichtige Problemkreise zu identifizieren und die für ihre weitere Behandlung zu beachtenden Gesichtspunkte anzugeben, neue Aspekte aufzudecken, Gewichte zu setzen. Während die Arbeit so einerseits die Ergebnisse einer Fülle vorhandener Einzeluntersuchungen verwertet, so können andererseits zahlreiche neue Untersuchungen von den hier dargelegten Ideen ihren Ausgang nehmen. Insoweit kann die Arbeit als die Begründung eines Programms für Forschung, Entwicklung und Produktion (Organisation und Durchführung von Dokumentationsmaßnahmen) im Bereich der Dokumentation oder, allgemeiner, im Bereich der "in-formation science" angesehen werden. Diese Vorgehensweise ist zugleich beispielhaft gemeint: Wir halten dafür, daß es nicht genügt, in der Theorie anzuerkennen, daß die Produktion immer neuen Wissens ohne eine durchgreifende Systematisierung des vorhandenen Wissens in eine Sackgasse führen muß, sondern daß daraus eine ganz praktische Konsequenz gezogen werden muß: die Konsequenz nämlich, daß der Systematisierung von Wissen der gleiche wissenschaftliche Rang gebührt wie der originären Forschung. Im übrigen ist die Systematisierung von Wissen auch ein Gegenstand dieser Arbeit, den wir unter der Überschrift "automatisierte Enzyklopädie" behandeln.
