Die vorliegende Arbeit will einen umfassenden kritischen Überblick über wichtige Probleme der Dokumentation, insbesondere der sozialwissenschaftlichen Dokumentation, "vom höheren Standpunkt aus" geben. Sie kann insoweit auch als eine - allerdings recht anspruchsvolle - Einführung in die Dokumentation gelesen werden, wenn man bereit ist, fehlende Stücke insbesondere zur Dokumentationstechnik in der angegebenen Literatur nachzulesen. Auf Grund einer umfassenden Literaturübersicht wurde versucht, zu einer vertieften Betrachtungsweise vorzustoßen, Standpunkte der .herrschenden Meinung" zu prüfen und gegebenenfalls in Frage zu stellen, wichtige Problemkreise zu identifizieren und die für ihre weitere Behandlung zu beachtenden Gesichtspunkte anzugeben, neue Aspekte aufzudecken, Gewichte zu setzen.
