Dark fu catturato nel 1942 mentre prestava servizio volontario nella Royal Navy durante la Seconda guerra mondiale e trascorse i tre anni successivi in un campo di prigionia tedesco. Il suo interesse per l'antropologia fiorì dopo aver incontrato Walter W. Taylor durante la prigionia. Dark studiò una grande varietà di culture, dalla Mesoamerica al Benin nell'Africa occidentale.Alla fine degli anni '60 Dark si interessò all'arte del Pacifico, in particolare al Kilenge della Nuova Britannia occidentale e successivamente a Palau.Ritiratosi in Cornovaglia nel 1978, Dark continuò a coltivare la sua passione per l'antropologia diventando redattore della Pacific Arts Association Newsletter nel 1975 (in seguito Pacific Arts nel 1990). Dark intraprese un lavoro sul campo a Kiribati dal 28 febbraio 1982 al 16 marzo 1983, dopodiché trascorse due mesi a Palau nel 1986. Due collezioni che formò lì sono ora conservate al British Museum.
