Hard Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Near Fine. 4th Printing. 4th printing (Ford-Smith, Folio 76 #1140). Includes publisher's slipcase. Fine book in near fine slipcase. Slipcase faintly scuffed. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2003 Hard Cover. 288 pp. A collection of humorous vignettes by various authors, with contributions by William Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Winston S. Churchill, the Queen of England, G.K. Chesterton, P.G. Wodehouse, Mark Twain, Dorothy Parker, Groucho Marx, etc., etc. Ever since Chaucer's day, when the host of the Tabard Inn in Southwark rose to welcome the Canterbury Pilgrims with a joke, the After Dinner Speech, designed, if possible, to reduce the assembled company to helpless merriment, has presented the ultimate challenge. The best speakers are natural story-tellers - Gerard Hoffnung, reading a selection of letters from continental hoteliers: 'There is a French widow in every bedroom affording delightful prospects'; John Mortimer telling the woeful tale of a man's numerous unsuccessful attempts to murder his wife: 'At no time did Mrs Scott feel that the magic had gone out of their marriage' - and in this collection of post-prandial treasures you will find the very best of them, from Groucho Marx on how to resist a femme fatale, to Ralph Steadman surreally addressing the Lewis Carroll Centenary Dinner. 'Goodness', said a friend on greeting Mae West, 'where did you get those beautiful pearls?' 'Goodness', replied Mae, 'had nothing to do with it.' Shaggy dog stories, practical jokes, sporting anecdotes, rousing toasts, travellers' tales and risque reminiscences rub shoulders in this essential collection with real-life revelations and moments of history. Among the guests are Peter Ustinov, Jilly Cooper, Brian Johnstone, Charles Dickens, Dorothy Parker, Robertson Davies, Henry Grady and A.P. Herbert. There is food and drink in abundance. There is gentle reflection and endearing charm as well as defiant frivolity. Above all there are stories for every occasion - witty, absurd, momentous, philosophical, fascinating, poignant, and forever entertaining.…

John William Ransom Taylor, OBE Hon DEng FRAeS FRHistS AFIAA, (8 June 1922 - 12 December 1999) was a British aviation expert and editor of a number of aviation publications. He edited Jane's All the World's Aircraft (JAWA) for three decades during the Cold War between the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies and the USA/European alliance (NATO). He retired as Jane's editor in 1989. Taylor made predictions of the performance of Soviet military equipment. A quote from the UK Guardian newspaper said: "In 1961, when Western intelligence was fascinated by early glimpses of a new Soviet bomber, the Tupolev Tu-22, many analysts estimated it could reach a speed of Mach 2.5. But Taylor, after noting the shape of the aircraft's engine intakes, put the maximum at no more than Mach 1.4, which proved much closer to the truth. In 1983, he analyzed the MiG-29 fighter, whose agility was the cause of much anxiety amongst NATO's war-gamers; seven years later they were found to be accurate to within an inch. " He joined Jane's as editorial assistant on Jane's All the World's Aircraft (JAWA) in 1955 and four years later he took over as editor. Traces the development and uses of rockets and missiles, with emphasis on the rapid progress in rocketry in the preceding thirty years. Gordon C. Davies was a prolific book cover artist from the 1950s to the 1980s, most notably on a great many science fiction books as he was a very good artist of technology, from trains and planes to spaceships, and military subjects which included hardware. Davies worked for various publishers, including Scion, Authentic Science Fiction, Futuristic Science Stories, Panther Books and Brown Watson. Davies worked elsewhere, including features for Daily Mail Boys Annual, Swift Annual, Eagle Annual and centre-spreads for the Eagle weekly. He continued to produce covers for Pan Books and New English Library, notably for titles by Arthur C. Clarke and Robert A. Heinlein. Daviesâ"full name Gordon Charles Henry Daviesâ"was born in West Derby, Lancashire, on 6 May 1923. Davies died in 1994. Gordon Davies (illustratore).…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a captivating collection of poems from prominent Georgian poets, offering a glimpse into the literary landscape of early 20th-century England. Through evocative imagery and diverse themes, the poems explore the relationship between humanity and the natural world, delve into personal reflections and experiences, and grapple with universal emotions such as love, loss, and the passage of time. Grounded in the pastoral tradition, the poems often depict rural settings and celebrate the beauty of the English countryside. The authors capture the essence of nature's changing seasons, the sights and sounds of the natural world, and the simple joys of everyday life. Beyond their appreciation for nature, the poets contemplate profound philosophical questions about human existence, mortality, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. This collection of poems provides a valuable window into the thoughts, feelings, and artistic expressions of a generation of poets navigating a time of great social and cultural transformation, leaving readers with enduring insights into the human condition and the power of poetic language.
