That tradition is vividly portrayed in Gardens of Georgia, commissioned by the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., to commemorate its sixtieth anniversary and to celebrate the heritage and beauty of Georgia's gardens. As noted by Georgia founder James Oglethorpe in 1732, Georgia has a happy climate. From the broad-shouldered mountains of the Blue Ridge, through the red clay of the rolling piedmont, across the sprawling piney coastal plain, and on to the subtropical islands on the Atlantic, Georgia is blessed with four regions of gardening opportunities, distinctly defined by differences in elevation, climate, soil, and natural vegetation.Writer William Mitchell and photographer Richard Moore have portrayed the wonders of gardens historic and contemporary, public and private, and urban, suburban, and rural from each of these regions. Whether illustrating overall gardenscapes or capturing intimate vignettes and individual blossoms, Richard Moore's photographs have a depth of color and clarity of detail that immerse the reader into a world of delightful splendor. The text by Willaim Mitchell not only describes the settings as they are today, but also spins a rich background of history in the context of the botanical Eden observed by early explorers. The richest legacy of each generation is to preserve and protect an always vulnerable natural environment and help nature bring forth its green and glowing cycles of rebirth. Gardens of Georgia celebrates that legacy, sharing the ongoing dream of paradise--a new Eden--whether it is in a grand formal garden from an earlier era or a small plot of perennials in a Georgia yard. ; FINE/FINE. Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very Good. Black and white press photograph, promotional device resembling lobby card. 8'' x 10''. In Very Good condition. In Victorian London, Edward Styles is accused of being the notorious Haymarket Strangler, the brutal killer of five women. Twenty years after he is tried and executed for these crimes James Rankin (Karloff), a novelist and social reformer, launches an investigation to prove that Styles is innocent. His search for clues leads him first to the sleazy Judas Hole music hall, where the Strangler picked his victims from the resident can-can dancers and loose women, and then to the prison cemetery of Newgate where Styles was buried - in order to exhume his body. When the killings start again, Rankin's theory seems to be vindicated. However his growing obsession with the case signals a most unwelcome revelation as to the true identity of the murderer. Aggiungi al carrelloCarney was a U.S. Navy admiral and had a distinguished career through World War Two; he helped to arrange and was present at the Japanese surrender ceremony aboard the U.S.S. Missouri; he served as commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Southern Europe (1951-53) and Chief of Naval Operations (1953-54). MacArthur was a famed New York socialite and philanthropist and devoted wife of controversial general Douglas MacArthur; she was at his side aboard a PT boat when he left the Philippines ahead of a Japanese siege; she often represented him at official functions. PS, glossy black-and-white 10" X 8", n.p., n.y. Near fine. Circa 1945-issued news agency photograph taken aboard the U.S.S. Missouri on V-J Day -- September 2, 1945 -- showing Douglas MacArthur standing at left in foreground in front of a microphone watching Japanese general Yoshijiro Umezu at right signing the surrender document on behalf of the armed forces as their senior officer. Rows of the highest-ranking American officers -- Nimitz, Halsey, etc. -- fill the background. Along the narrow blank upper margin, Robert B. Carney signs boldly in black fineline and actually draws an arrow about one inch down to himself, standing alongside Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey. On the same margin, at left directly above General Douglas MacArthur, his wife signs "Mrs Douglas MacArthur," also in black fineline. (She was not aboard the ship in Tokyo Bay during the signing, but waited in the closest nearby port of Yokohama.) Printed text in lower right corners reads "Jap Surrender Aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay. V-J Day Sept. 2, 1945. McArthur & Aide. (Halsey in Center Rear) N-2." An evocative, iconic image signed later in life by the last surviving U.S. admiral present and the wife of the noted general at front.…
