Below is given a brief discussion of the extent to which this change, which has found almost general favour, may be credited. First the importance of Morelli's step must be emphasised. By a resolute, perhaps even brutal, division a con-fused mass of mediocre school compositions were separated from those of the master and thus the way cleared for a better comprehension of the subject.
