Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. David Deuchar (etched by) (illustratore). Quarter bound in light tan leather with marbled paper boards and end papers. The leather is a little worn and fraying on the spine edges. Binding is tight and the contents mostly clean, some tanning on preliminary and last pages and a little tanning throughout the book. Frontispiece, illustrated title page, title page, small oval portrait presumably Holbein, Preface, 46 engraved plates with tissue guards and the text in English and French, and one further engraving depicting a dance of death. The title page has some tanning and a small stamp in the lower corner of the St. Charles College Catonsville Library MD and there are two other similar small stamps. A contemporary previous owner's inscription in the top right corner of the title page.

A few plates carry a date alongside Deuchar's signature - in Volume I, of 1784, 1785, 1786, 1788 or 1802; in Volume II, of 1784, 1786, 1787 or 1788; in Volume III, of 1783, 1784 or 1786.The plates reproduce paintings and drawings showing genre scenes or portraits, most by 17th-century Dutch artists. Most plates are etchings. A few are aquatints (I:[77]; II:[86]; III: [19, 20, 31, 38, 41, 87, 123-32]). Deuchar was an amateur etcher, but his work influenced the younger Raeburn.

4 volumes quarto 10 1/2 x 9 inches- very handsomely leather bound in full period red morocco, spines gilt in compartments, boards with numerous gilt and blind stamped fillets, all edges gilt. Gilt stamped at the base of the spines 'India Proofs'. 370 engraved plates on India paper- including 4 engraved titles within rococo borders- all but the titles mounted on thicker period paper as issued. Nine pages with two engravings to the page and 5 pages with three images to the page, three folding engravings. This work is usually found in two or three volumes with numerous images per page- this 4 volume India Proof edition is scarce. Contains the scatological plate - often missing. Plate numbers in this work often vary slightly. The vast majority of the engravings are of peasant life. Some plates in volume four with some added mezzotint. Some slight rubbing to the gilt and marginal stains to the first four pages of volume four. A LOVELY COPY. David Deuchar 1743-1808 was a goldsmith, seal engraver and an amateur etcher. One of the engravings represents Deuchar's trade card.

Large, thick Folio, late 18th century marbled boards and 1/2 sheep, crack to spine and partial unhinging of front board, age worn but otherwise well-preserved. A handsome and imposing manuscript of 1000s of engraved crests, including numerous crests drawn by hand, arranged by the famed engraver David Deuchar (1743-1808) interestingly organized according to device type (i.e. hands, lions etc.) Carefully compiled and researched manuscript, seemingly intended for publication, with numerous markings accorded to known and unknown heraldic crests and their corresponding family names. Pasted to first blank is a letter dated 1884 from the Edinburgh bookseller William F. Clay explaining how he "secured a unique collection of several thousand heraldic crests and devices, engraved and drawn in ink by the celebrated engraver David Deuchar and his son." He offers the manuscript for 30 shillings (1884). Clearly a working manuscript of the well regarded "Dance of Death" engraver and of great use for research.
