Orig. vellum with the coats of arms of the 13 cantons on both covers, spine gilt. Geneva, Sadag, 1932. Numbered copy of the de luxe edition bound in full vellum, of a total edition of 1000 copies. One of the most beautifully produced chronicles in facsimile. It was written by Diebold Schilling the Younger (1460-1522?) around 1513, and it offers a detailed account of daily life in the 15th century, treating such diverse topics as trade, fortification, topography, dress rules, etc. The technique of the illustrations is unique for the time: painted in opaque colors, with bold outlines in black ink, it is meant to convey the impression of paintings rather than colored pen drawings. Bern, Franz Samuel Fätscheryn, 1743. First edition of this important source for the history of the Burgundian wars by Diebold Schilling, town scribe and historian, who died shortly after the completion of his monumental chronicle of the city of Bern. The present "Beschreibung" is part three of the manuscript which Schilling's widow sold to Zurich, and is published here for the first time unillustrated on the initiative of Johann Jakob Bodmer. Schilling relates, as an eye-witness, the events of the years 1468-1484, the wars between Charles the Bold and the Confederates which culmiated in the battles of Morat and Nancy. Of particular interest are the texts of historical songs popular at the time which he preserved to posterity. - Ms. library number on front pastedown. - Haller IV, 617; Barth 833; Brunet V, 202; cf. Aggiungi al carrello(guter Zustand).

Condizione: vg. 1) Facsimile sheets (loose): Total of 680 leaves in fold-out with 443 pages of color reproductions from original 1513 manuscript. Prints were proof copies owned by Prof. Eduard Studer, who was one of the editors of the 1981 reprint by the Faksimile Verlag. Sheets printed on recto and verso, uncut with color strip on top- and bottom edge of each leaf. High quality facsimile with plates in rich vibrant colors. The 1513 manuscript is the most impressive of all chronicles by the Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft, giving an important insight into the political, social, economic and religious life of the middle ages in Lucern. Chronicles such as these were important in medieval Europe's societies, reflecting wealth and economic power but more importantly, giving invaluable historical insight of the time for later generations. The text describes the history of the Eidgenossenschaft from its beginnings, focusing on the time period between 1474 - 1513. Two artists were chosen by the Eidsgenossenschaft to illustrate the work: Diebold Schilling the Younger (before 1460 - 1515(?) and Luzern painter Hans von Arx. Schilling's illustrations are in slightly richer, more vibrant colors with a Gothic look whereas Arx's images are in lighter colors with an influence of the style of the Renaissance. The plates illustrate events such as Schilling presenting the city officials with his chronicle, building of churches in the community, conflicts and wars of the time, the Black death, anti-Semitic images of Jews burning at the stake in Augsburg, Jews during a "Ritualmord" on a young boy, as well as many other images of daily life in medieval Switzerland. After several years of hard work, Diebold presented the "Luzerner Schilling" (Luzerner Chronic) to the city council on January 15th, 1513. It is the most important contribution to the historiography of his times.
