paperback. Condizione: Good. Softcover. Good binding and cover. Clean, unmarked pages. Name on fep. Minor shelf wear. xx, 268 pages, 16 unnumbered leaves of plates : black and white illustrations and maps ; 22 cm + fold-out map. "This reprint by the Mountaineers reproduces exactly the text of the original 1948 printing of Don Munday's classic story of mountaineering adventure. As A.P. Coleman introduced the book, 'By their courage and determination the Mundays have disclosed to the climbing world one of the most splendid regions of high mountains and vast glaciers in America.' From 1926 onwards, Don Munday, the Canadian mountaineer, always accompanied by his wife, made yearly trips to Mount Waddington. It was not until ten years later, in 1936, that the conquest of the 13,000 ft. mountain was completed. This is the whole story of the pioneer adventure that put this 'Unknown Mountain' on the map, written exactly and excitingly as only a mountaineer could write it and illustrated by excellent climbers' photographs taken by the author and his wife.".

In 1909, Don Munday's family arrived in Western Australia and settled in the Kirk's Rock district near Wickepin, two hundred miles from Perth. Munday was eight years old when his father died, and his mother was left to raise seven children in harsh conditions. During the Great Depression, Munday worked at wheat lumping, road clearing and shearing. He became famous as a shearer: in England, he broke the world shearing record in 1937.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Unknown Mountain - First Edition, First Printed May 1948 in Publisher's original blue cloth boards with bright gilt lettering on the spine, original Dust Jacket placed in Mylar. This classic work chronicles Canadian mountaineer Don Munday's pioneering expeditions to British Columbia's Coast Mountains, culminating in the historic conquest of Mount Waddington, often referred to as "Mystery Mountain." The narrative describes the rugged terrain, vast glaciers, and the challenges faced during these early explorations. The book features a black and white frontispiece and numerous additional photographic plates showcasing stunning mountain landscapes, glaciers, and climbing routes. A large, detailed folding sketch map of a portion of the Coast Mountains, drawn by W. A. Don Munday in 1937, is present. The pictorial dust jacket features an illustration by Bip Pares. Don Munday (Walter Alfred Don Munday, 1894-1950) was a legendary Canadian mountaineer, explorer, and author. Along with his wife, Phyllis Munday, he led groundbreaking expeditions into the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, particularly focusing on the elusive peak then known as "Mystery Mountain," which would later be officially named Mount Waddington. Their relentless efforts, spanning from 1926, are a testament to early Canadian mountaineering spirit and exploration. "The Unknown Mountain" is Munday's personal account of these expeditions, making it a cornerstone work in mountaineering literature and an essential piece for collectors interested in Canadian history, exploration, and alpine adventure. The book provides an invaluable firsthand record of the challenges and triumphs associated with discovering and mapping one of North America's most formidable mountain ranges. Condition: Exterior - The spine of the book is unfaded blue cloth with clear gilt lettering. The blue cloth boards are clean, firm, and retain their original color. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright and fully legible. The binding is tight and square, and the hinges are strong. The dust jacket is present. It shows overall toning and some areas of discoloration, especially along the spine. There is creasing, rubbing, and some closed tears along the edges and spine ends. The original price of 21/- net is present on the front flap. The jacket illustration by Bip Pares remains clear. Interior - The pages are clean and generally crisp. There are no tears, stains, or repairs to the pages.

One page describes Vancouver as "A City of Champions" due to the success of sprinter Percy Williams, boxer "Jimmy" McLarnin, hockey player "Cyclone" Taylor, and others. Two pages are devoted to the First Narros Bridge Company Limited which was incorporated in 1926 to build, own and operate the bridge. Map of British Columbia affixed inside back cover, dated 1937. Prior owner's name clipped from first leaf and its glassine protector. Minor doodling upon first leaf otherwise unmarked. Average external wear and soiling to illustrated brown covers. A lovely memento of Vancouver's earlier days.
