Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st edition. 1st edition, in second state dust jacket. A Very Good copy in Good dust jacket. Tall 8vo., 158 pp., chiefly illustrated with b&w photographs. Bound in blue cloth with gilt titles, in light blue, b&w photo-illustrated dust jacket. The dust jacket has kept the cloth boards very clean and protected, with just light wear at the tips. The dust jacket, priced at $2.75, (and with the Voltaire quote) is moderately soiled and worn at the joints and edges. There is a very small loss at the spine's crown and foot. Preliminary pages foxed, starting at the half title page and continues, gradually lightening, till the Foreword; with only an occasional dot of foxing on the first few text pages. Dorothea Lange's iconic photo-journal of the plight of American migrant workers during the Dust Bowl. Lange and Taylor (married) were hired by the FSA, though not as photographers, but as Taylor as a researcher and Dorothea as his clerk-stenographer. Dorothea Lange, photographer (illustratore).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. SIGNED note laid in. 158pp. Quarto [26 cm] Blue cloth over boards with lettering in gilt on the backstrip and front board. Spine very subtly rolled. Spine ends and corners of the covers gently bumped and rubbed. Dorothea Lange's death announcement is mounted to the verso of the front free endpaper. In a price-clipped, first issue dust jacket, with wear. There are losses and closed tears to the edges and folds. The largest loss is from the top edge of the rear panel, measuring 3 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/4 inches deep at its deepest point. There is a small piece of disintegrating tape to the top edge of the rear panel. With "Mein Kampf" advertised on the rear panel. A classic of photojournalism. Note signed by Dorothea Lange tucked in. The note, dated "22 January 1948," is addressed to Hazel and Paul Fredricksen. The Hazel Fredericksen to whom this note is addressed, is likely the author of "The Child and His Welfare" (San Francisco: W. H. Freeman & Co., 1948). Fredericksen was a member of the faculty of the School of Social Welfare of the University of California. Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) was a pre minent documentary artist of her time. She was most known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration. "An American Exodus," a pioneering collaboration between Lange and her economist husband, Paul Taylor, documents the rural poverty of the depression-era exodus that resulted in 300,000 migrants to California in search of farm work. They made use of the Farm Security Administration archive, including photographs accompanied by direct quotes from the migrant farm workers themselves. It was one of the first books to combine photographs with oral testimonies. Their book presented an iconic image of the Depression and Dust Bowl era, focused public attention on the extreme hardships suffered by rural populations, and influenced the direction of documentary photography thereafter. First edition in a first state dust jacket. Signed.

dj. First Edition. First edition and first printing. Hardcover. 158 pages. One of the best books to come out of the FSA experience, that shows the grim resolve and the conditions in the late 1930's dust bowl. Features text by Paul Schuster Taylor and powerful black and white images by Lange. An about very good copy in blue cloth boards with some light wear to the spine ends and corners and some foxing to the pages but with the rubberstamp ownership stamp of Henry Holmes Smith to the half title page and in a very good second issue dust jacket (Voltaire quote on the rear panel) with some small chips to the spine ends and corners, a small chip to the base of the front panel and some other edge tears and wear. Still, a solid copy of this classic with an excellent provenance. (Roth 102-103, Parr & Badger v1, 142-143).

First Edition. Quarto (26cm); navy blue cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; dark blue topstain; 158pp; illus. Mild rubbing to spine ends and lower board edges; faint ripple to bottom edge of text block; faintly musty from long storage; still generally clean, tight and Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper. With the ownership signature of Sol Libsohn (see note). Arguably the greatest American photo-documentary book of the 20th century, and certainly the most-quoted. Lange's masterwork is described by Parr thus: "Of all the documentary books stemming from the New Deal, and the FSA in particular, An American Exodus [.] is the most considered. Not only does it have the closest integration of text and image, but the whole book was compiled with scrupulous attention to the presentation of facts, without either hyperbole or undue rhetoric on the part of photographer and writer. This makes An American Exodus the most balanced of New Deal documentary books, and therefore a model for the genre." This a significant association copy, bearing the ownership signature of noted American documentary photographer Sol Libsohn (1914-2001), co-founder in 1936 of the Photo League, a highly influential cooperative of left-wing documentary photographers which, though it never claimed Lange as a member, certainly shared (and drew from) her aesthetic. PARR-BADGER 1:142. ROTH 101.

First edition, in the rare first issue jacket with Mein Kampf advertised on the back panel. Lange's photographs of the flight of families from the Dust Bowl and Taylor's commentary combine to make this one of the most powerful photobooks of the 21st century, as recognized in Roth's The Book of 101 Books. The parallels to John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath are hard to miss, however, despite being called "Steinbeck in Pictures" in a contemporary review, the inverse was actually the case: "Steinbeck's powerful text was, in effect, Dorothea Lange in words. Her photographs had inspired Steinbeck's novel and also the the film that followed." (Spirn, p. 38). Andrew Roth, ed., The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century, 2001; Anne Whiston Spirn, Daring to Look: Dorothea Lange's Photographs & Reports from the Field, 2008. Quarto. Monochrome illustrations throughout after photographs by Lange. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, illustrated endpapers. With illustrated dust jacket. Top edges bumped, mild foxing to first few leaves; dust jacket unclipped, joints and extremities rubbed, some paper loss: a very good copy in like jacket.
