No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. This depicts the Mahmal mounted on a caparisoned camel flanked by Ottoman dignitaries and military figures after leaving Damascus on the Hajj to Mecca. Sheet size 270 x 216mm, with image size 218 x 186mm, captioned in French and Arabic. Very good condition with light handling wear. This may be a copy print, suggested by the caption pasted on to negative and printed out, probably by Dumas himself, as his details have been retained. Dumas (1830-1905) was an Italian photographer of French descent. He trained with Leopoldo Alinari in Florence. Some accounts state that he opened a studio in Beirut in 1860, others that he opened it in Constantinople first in the 1860s before moving to Beirut in 1867, the same year as Felix Bonfils. He was active until 1890.

With 39 original albumen photographs including 37 larger photos from ca. 22x28 cm (8 ¾ x 11 cm) to ca. 16,5x22 cm (6 ½ x 8 ½ in); the two smaller photos are ca. 11x21 cm (4 ¼ x 8 ¼ in) and ca. 12,5x19,5 cm (4 ¾ x 7 ½ in). All but seven photos signed and captioned in negative; three photos with period manuscript ink captions in the right lower corners. Two photos of a monolith block in Baalbek are the same. Period maroon full cloth album with gilt and blind stamped ornaments on the spine. Paper label of "Papeterie de la Rue de la Barre, P. Dellevaux á Lyon" on the front pastedown endpaper. Mounts waved, a few images mildly faded, front board slightly detaching at the inner hinge, several images with tears or minor losses at the corners, but overall a very good album of interesting photos. An attractive collection of large albumen photos, mostly of Lebanon, with a dozen views of Damascus, Jerusalem and Istanbul. The majority of photos (twenty-seven) belong to the "Maison Bonfils" studio, four photos are signed by the Beirut studio of Tancrède Dumas, and one view of Istanbul bears the signature of the local studio of Guillaume Berggren. Twenty-three photos depict the sites of the Baalbek temple complex - the Acropolis, the Temple of Jupiter, courtyard chambers, and the Stone of the Pregnant Woman monolith (the latter one presents in two copies). Three photos show Beirut's famous pine forest and Lebanese cedars. There are also five views of Damascus (the Great Mosque, the tomb of John the Baptist located inside the Great Mosque, general view of the city, the Barrada River), three views of Jerusalem (Damascus Gate, the Dome of the Rock, Akeldama field), and three views of Istanbul (general view of the Galata Tower, Fountain of Ahmed III, the fountain on the Bosphorus near the Sweet Waters of Asia). DUMAS, Tancrede. No. 2 Jerusalem Panorama. Beyreuth [Beirut]: Tancrede Dumas, 1889. Three albumen prints mounted and joined on patterned paper with slits (likely to hold photographs); entire piece measures 37-3/4 by 9-1/2 inches unfolded. $4800.Beautiful large three-part panorama of late 19th-century Jerusalem, with labels for the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Hurva Synagogue, the Tomb of David, the Holy Sepulchre, the Garden of Gethsemane, and more. This striking panorama depicts the view looking into Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives just outside the city walls, including many major historical and biblical sights from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, to the tombs of David and Absalom. The photographer, Tancrede Dumasalthough born and trained in Florenceis today best known for his work in the Middle East. In 1860, he opened a studio in Beirut and specialized in albumen print portraits of local characters as well as images of interest to religious pilgrims such as this one. According to information from University of Pennsylvania's Lenkin Family Collection of Photography, this panorama was likely first published between 1880 and 1882. Slightest rubbing to edges, a few very faint spots to images, paper backing beginning to separate from photographs, reinforcement to joints. A lovely and desirable item.
