Duveen (1910-1992), whose interest in alchemy and early chemistry began while he was studying at Oxford, the catalogue records his celebrated collection of more than 3,000 volumes, assembled from the 1930s through the late 1940s. Initially focused broadly on chemistry and particularly on alchemy, Duveen's collecting interests developed during his years in Paris to include Antoine Lavoisier and the history of French chemistry. Despite the disruption of the Second World War, much of his collection remained safely concealed in a French farmer's barn during the German occupation. Long ranked alongside John Ferguson's Bibliotheca Chemica as one of the two fundamental reference works for the bibliography of alchemy and chemistry, the catalogue deliberately complements Ferguson's strengths in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century material by giving particularly strong coverage to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century chemistry.
