Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 69 pgs, portrait plates. Original green cloth with gilt titled cover with deckled edges. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers are clean and bright, minor rubbing to lower edge. Interior pages are clean; although starting to become fragile with age (acid migration use…d in making the paper); front endpaper and frontis cracked along gutter. With clear, mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Baker's reminiscences of Beall first appeared in the Richmond Time-Dispatch, then edited by Douglas Southall Freeman, and here presented in book form. Beall, known as The Terror of the Chesapeake was a native of Jefferson Co., WV (then part of Virginia) and organized a group of Confederate naval irregulars. They operated in the Chesapeake area at sea in much the same way that Mosby operated in the Shenandoah Valley. Beall and Baker eventually made their way to Canada and mounted a raid in Lake Erie to free the Confederate prisoners on Johnson's Island. Beall once defeated and captured 3 Union ships in one day. He was later captured by the Union, tried for espionage, and hanged by Federal authorities. Very scarce in this first edition, sometimes noted as being limited to 300 copies. REFERENCES: Not in Dorn or Nevins.
