Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good Plus. First Edition Thus. 1992. xvii, 234pp. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board. The book is in excellent condition. No inscriptions. "Ralph Kirkton's "History", written in the 1690s, is effectively a history of Scotland as a whole, from the Restoration of Charles II to the defeat of the Presbyterians at Bothwell Bridge in 1679. Kirkton, a Presbyterian minister who continued to preach in defiance of the government and under threat of execution, writes vividly of the events he's caught up in. He shrewdly assesses the personalities and motives of many influential figures, such as Gilbert Burnet, Lord Stair, and the Duke of Lauderdale. He is fair-minded and balanced in considering the problems of the Restoration government, and a sophisticated and reliable interpreter of this turbulent period. The only previous edition of his history, from 1817, is not generally available. The present edition has an introduction setting the book in its contemporary context and explaining why it was influential but frequently misinterpreted; and it provides brief notes to identify many characters who appear in the "History".".

Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Very Good. New Edition. 1876. New edition in two volumes. xl, 393pp., colour frontispiece and 3 other colour plates, 1 black and white plate and 31 illustrations within the text; [vi], 8 pages of music, 440pp., a colour frontispiece and 1 other colour plate, and black and white illustrations in the text (the list of illustrations states that specimens of music should appear at page 269 but this probably refers to the music bound in at the start of the book). Top edges gilt. James Logan (1797-1872) was a Scottish author on Gaelic culture, best known for his book The Scottish Gaël. The work was first published in 1831, and was based on walking tours he had made in the Scottish highlands and islands during the previous decade, during which he collected Gaelic antiquities. The work encompasses a wide range of topics, from archaeology to early 19th-century Gaelic literature, and includes chapters on war, arms, dress, hunting, food, poetry and music, and religion. It also contains much valuable commentary on highland mores and traditional lore. The two volumes are uniformly bound in green buckram covered boards with gold titling on the spines (we are uncertain if this was the original binding). The cases of the books are in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few light marks and some soiling to page 65 in volume 1. There is a little light foxing on the fore edge of the text blocks. The endpapers are slightly foxed and the free endpapers are browned. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy set and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.

This volume is a comprehensive monograph chronicling the personal and professional journey of the Indian architect and urban conservationist Brinda Somaya, from 1975 to the present. Belonging to the 'Bridge Generation', her work transcends stylistic vocabulary and draws its inspiration from Indian culture, the landscape of the subcontinent and principles of sustainable design and intervention. The book explores a cross-section of Somaya's diverse typology of projects, including housing, institutions, conservation, urban design, social design and industrial works that represent a unique 'non-stylistic' grammar that has a sense of 'order and appropriateness'. Situating her work in a broader context, the essays in this volume offer multiple perspectives on Somaya's accomplishments, while the dialogues outline the concerns central to her work. With Essays by Jon Lang, Porus Olpadwala, Mary Norman Woods and Ruturaj Parikh, and Dialogues with Arun Shourie, Kamu Iyer and Saryu Doshi.
