Aggiungi al carrelloEach volume: Hardback large octavo, dustjacket, very condition (in very good dustjacket), top edge little foxed, pages lightly toned, minor edgewear, bookshop sticker (v1 only). 324 pp. John Thomas Bigge was the Commissioner appointed by the Home Office (after receiving complaints) to enquire into the transportation system of sending convicts to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land, and their settlement under Governor Lachlan Macquarie. His two-volume report in 1822 - 1823 generated considerable controversy, and has been considered as the major issue for the future development of the Australian colonies. The ISBN 0855610271 applies to the 2-volume set: Volume 1: The Oral Evidence [and] Volume 2: The Written Evidence. The editor, Dr John Ritchie, a lecturer in history at the Australian National University (ANU), also wrote a revealing background report about Commissioner Bigge called 'Punishment and Profit' (based on his ANU PhD thesis).
