Poulton was an evolutionary biologist and lifelong advocate of natural selection who spent 70 years as scholar, lecturer and Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford where he befriended Walter Lock, Fellow and later Warden of Keble College, who was ten years his senior and served as Professor of Exegesis of Holy Scripture. What he made of this book's contents is unknown. Poulton published the volume as part of the centenary celebrations of Darwin's birth and the half-centenary of the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species. An excellent association. The letter concludes: 'May we have all reason to praise God's mercy in the complete restoration of our dearest Kitty's beloved husband. I do indeed share yr thankfulness in the happy prospect'.
