Published in Association with the proprietors of "Punch." Printed in Great Britain. From the Notes to the Verses and Pictures - The verses and pictures in this book appeared in Punch in 1926-28 and are collected by the kind permission of the proprietors of that paper. The notes then go on to provide a bit of background information on the contents of the material for each county. Edward Verrall Lucas, (1868 - 1938) was an English humorist, essayist, playwright, biographer, publisher, poet, novelist, short story writer and editor. Lucas joined the staff of the humorous magazine Punch in 1904, and remained there for the rest of his life. He was a prolific writer, most celebrated for his short essays, but he also produced verses, novels and plays. From 1908 to 1924 Lucas combined his work as a writer with that of publisher's reader for Methuen and Co. In 1924 he was appointed chairman of the company. Ernest Howard Shepard OBE MC (1879 - 1976) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is known especially for illustrations of the anthropomorphic animal and soft toy characters in The Wind in the Willows and Winnie-the-Pooh. Throughout his military service in WWI , he had been contributing to Punch. He was hired as a regular staff cartoonist in 1921 and became lead cartoonist in 1945.
