An important reference that covers the subject and history of sporting books from 1373 through 1950. 443 pp. This book give biographical essays describing the lives and work of the most significant sporting authors of the British Isles and North America. The essays are arranged chronologically beginning with Edward, Duke of York (The Master of Game) and George Turbervile. The bulk of entries concern the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and all but a handful of the then extant authors were born in the nineteenth century. Notables include William Somerville, Peter Beckford, Charles Apperley ("Nimrod"), R.S. Surtees, Thomas Smith, F.P. Delme Radcliffe, William Henry Herbert ("Frank Forester"), Lord North, E.OE. Somerville, et al.

First limited, numbered edition, this is #364 of 375 copies printed by Ernest R. Gee NY. Tissue-guarded frontispiece and one other engraving in lightl…y soiled salmon colored paper covered boards with paper printed spine and cover labels that are complete and legible. Backstrip and 1/2" of 3 gutter ends chipped, book tips bumped and rubbed w/cardboard showing, hinge papers fine, one address label on frt pastedn, 47pp deckle-edged text tight and bright without tears or soil. Book now fitted with a removable, clear mylar jacket. The Gloucester Foxhunting Club, the earliest organized hunt in America, was founded in 1766 by a number of Philadelphia Gents. The Club flourished for fifty-two years and was dissolved in 1818. Ernest R. Gee, knowing how rare the first printing of this book was, decided it was so important a work, he took it upon himself to republished this small run so that present-day sportsmen may have a record of the doings of their ancestors over one hundred years ago.

The fragile jacket is scarce in any condition. A very special association copy--Maclay was a noted book collector, equestrian, horse show official, and philanthropist. He created the Maclay Medal Cup for the National Horse Show, of which he served as longtime president, and eventually his Tallahassee house and gardens were donated to Florida as a state park. Can be sent outside the US for less than the default shipping rate. Good (pages more or less foxed throughout, else clean and sturdy).
