Ernst Hashagen describes in this book his exp…eriences as a submarine commander from 1915 to 1918 in the North Sea and the Irish Sea. The result is an enthralling work on the horrors of war and at the same time the fascination of the then new technology. With the U62 he sank several ships, such as the Ausonia and the Storstad. At the end of the war, he had to hand over his ship in Harwich to the English also this a depressing experience. The book by Hashagen established the long tradition of submarine literature in and after World War II. SM U-62 was one of the 329 submarines serving in the Imperial German Navy in World War I. U-62 was engaged in the naval warfare and took part in the First Battle of the Atlantic. On 8 March 1917, SM U-62 sank the coal freighter Storstad, the ship that had rammed and sunk the RMS Empress of Ireland ocean liner in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. On 7 August 1918, she torpedoed the French armored cruiser Dupetit-Thouars, which sank with the loss of 13 of her crew.

Dunbar-Nasmith commanded HMS E11 from 1914 to 1916, during wh…ich period he was decorated with the VC for attacking Turkish naval forces in the Sea of Marmara. He was promoted to rear-admiral in 1928 and vice-admiral in 1932, the same year that he became Commander-in-Chief, East Indies. After four years as Second Sea Lord (1935-8), he served as Commander-in-Chief Western Approaches and then as flag officer in charge, London. Hashagen's memoir describes wartime operations in the Atlantic, "where the trade-routes lay, the very arteries of the British Empire: there was the wide and storm-tossed battlefield of the U-Boats" (foreword). In peacetime, he became an advocate for international co-operation and was embroiled in 1932 in the so-called "Hashagen Affair" - a controversy surrounding his invitation from the BBC to appear on a domestic radio broadcast. The book was published in German in Berlin in 1931. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece, 15 half-tone plates, 3 maps. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black, submarine vignette in black on front cover, endpapers and top edge yellow, fore edge untrimmed. Spine sunned, heavy circular mark at head of spine (affecting lettering) and on rear cover, a few tidemarks internally: good only.
