Mendelssohn, I, 892, 889, 890: 'His description is unique for this period, as little information respecting these regions had been published up to this date'. Mendelssohn claims the first edition was in 1796, An 4 of the republic, which was issued with a map, not issued in this earlier edition. The second expedition was to Namaqualand, Damaraland, Bechcuanaland and the Kalahari Desert. It provides an interesting and early narrative of South Africa at a time when it was little known. The plates, including of giraffe and of hippopotamus, which were little known then, the local people, and several views . Wood 433, 434. His many references to birds and animals became useful primary sources for many later works by other authors. A classic work on African travel. A picture of this book is available on request.

Some damage to leather spine edges at covers (some looking to be caused by worm but no internal damage). So just a good woking set.

Attractive set of these very important early narratives of South Africa. The first two volumes (first voyage) in a later edition (the first appeared in 1790), and the last 3 volumes (second voyage) in fitrst edition. This edition of the first voyage has more plates than the first edition. The plates depict the local fauna (birds, giraffe, hippopotamus, hyena, black monkey), local people and numerous views. It includes the famous plate of the ??Hottentote au tablier?? (which is sometimes missing because of its explicit nature).

This set documents the second voyage of the intrepid French traveler, Le Vaillant, from Cape Town up the wes…tern coast reaching and crossing the Orange River into Namibia. This feat, long disputed, was later proven to be true. A noteworthy account of early travel into Namaqualand, Namibia, Damaraland, Bechuanaland and the Kalahari Desert. Many of the engraved plates depict the unusual mammals species encountered as well as the native people Le Vaillant met.
