Woolworth Company (also known as Woolworth's), an American retailer and pioneering five-and-dime department store. This book doubles as a promotional piece for the company. Woolworth's was founded in 1879 by its namesake, American entrepreneur Frank Winfield Woolworth (1852-1919). Woolworth was a pioneer in promoting the five-and-dime discount store concept where affordable products were priced at 5 or 10 cents. He also forwarded newer business practices that helped usher in the modern retail era such as setting fixed sales prices on products, buying products directly from manufacturers, and using self-service display cases that allowed customers to examine products without the assistance of sales representatives. Woolworth opened his first store under the five-cent model in February 1879, but it failed within a few weeks. However, Woolworth was not deterred and opened a new store just a few months later which had a very different outcome and catapulted him to financial success. Part of the success of Woolworth's newer store was due to him including products priced higher at ten cents; thereafter, Woolworth's specialized as a five-and-dime store. This book is promotional in nature and highlights the positive attributes of Woolworth's while also giving a brief history of the company. Parts of the printed text also describe the current business model and operations of the company such as the economic opportunities for young women and men who wish to work for the store. Several pages are dedicated to highlighting specific categories of products one can buy at Woolworth's such as Christmas gifts and decor, party decorations, household items for newlyweds, infants' and children's clothing, women's clothing and accessories, make-up and toiletry supplies, items for beach outings, men's clothing and accessories, and gardening supplies. A brief spread promotes Woolworth's luncheon counter where customers can buy some food and drink and dine in-store.…
