Originally published in the USA in 1947, and then in India in 1949. This is an expanded edition (first published in the USA in 1951) with the original Chinese characters and a new introduction by Fang.

Daher werden hier zwei Klassiker des Faches nicht im Nachdruck, sondern in deutscher Bearbeitung vorgelegt. K. T. Wu (Wu Guangqing…, 1905-2000), hat jahrelang als Mitarbeiter, dann als Leiter der Chinesischen Abteilung der Kongressbibliothek in Washington dazu beigetragen, daß sie eine der besten einschlägigen Sammlungen ausserhalb Ostasiens besitzt. Als Experte für chinesische Bibliographie und Buchgeschichte war er weltweit angesehen. Die Ming-Zeit (1368-1644) hat zwar nicht die Blüte der Song-Zeit erreicht, hat aber durch technische Neuerungen (Farbdruck, Verbesserung des Typendrucks) ebenfalls eine bedeutende Höhe erreicht. Wus Beitrag ist bis heute eine umfassende und zuverlässige Übersicht über die Vielfalt der Drucker und ihre besten Erzeugnisse. In China haben das Büchersammeln und die Bibliographie eine lange Geschichte. So ist es fast verwunderlich, dass ein erster Leitfaden für Büchersammler erst im 18. Jahrhundert entstand, verfasst von einem wenig bekannten Sonderling und Arzt namens SUN Congtian (1692-1767). In acht Kapiteln behandelt er die wesentlichen Herausforderungen an einen traditionellen chinesischen Büchersammler, die teils denen im zeitgenössischen Europa vergleichbar sind, so wenn es um Erwerbung, Katalogisierung und Aufbewahrung geht, aber auch wesentliche andere Aspekte betreffen, so die Rolle der Manuskripte, die Textkritik und die Kollationierung der Bücher. Ein eigenes Kapitel gibt Hinweise zur Besonnung und Belüftung der Bücher. Dieser bibliophile Traktat wurde von Achilles Fang (1910-1995), einem hervorragenden polyglotten Literaturwissenschaftler und Büchersammler an der Harvard-Universität übersetzt und bearbeitet, der damit einen ersten Schritt zur wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der chinesischen Bibliophilie unternommen hat. - Mit Registern.
