Der Zweck nachstehender Blätter ist, neben der Absicht, meine physiologischen Ansichten zu veröffentlichen, die Herausgabe eines Leitfadens für den Vortrag über die Entwicklungsgeschichte der menschlichen Frucht, welch…er zugleich den Zuhörern zum Nachlesen dienen könne. Die Wichtigkeit dieses Theils der Physiologie veranlaßte mich nämlich, denselben stets in besondern, von den Vorlesungen über theoretische Geburtshilfe getrennten, Stunden vorzutragen. Meine Zuhörer wünschten den Hauptinhalt dieses Vortrags gedruckt besitzen zu können, und so erfülle ich denn jetzt ihren Wunsch. Zu gleich habe ich mich bemüht, das Werk so zu bearbeiten, daß es auch zum Selbstudium benutzt werden könne. Einstweilen gebe ich nur die Geschichte der frühsten Entwicklung aller Theile der Frucht und der weitern Entwicklung des Knochensystems. Sollte mein Versuch Beifall finden, so werde ich die Darstellung der besondern Entwicklung aller übrigen Gebilde nachfolgen lassen." Vorwort, Giessen, im August 1832. Ferdinand August Maria Franz von Ritgen (1787-1867) Medizinprofessor, Amtsarzt, Chirurg, Gynäkologe, Geburtshelfer und Begründer einer der ersten neun deutschen Geburtshelferschulen. 1814 habilitierte sich Ritgen und wurde als Professor der Medizin an die Universität Gießen gerufen. Bei seiner Berufung erhielt Ritgen eine freie Dienstwohnung. Dafür wurde er verpflichtet, den Hebammen unentgeltlich Unterricht zu erteilen. Nach 1816 nahm er den Hebammenunterricht auf und setzte die Gründung einer eigenen Hebammenschule durch. Als Personal dafür standen ihm im Entbindungshaus nur eine Oberhebamme, ein Rechner und eine Wärterin zur Verfügung. Trotz der schlechten Unterstützung leistete er eine für damalige Verhältnisse vorbildliche Organisation des Unterrichts für die Hebammen und die Studenten der Medizin. Er entwickelte den sogenannten Ritgen-Hinterdammgriff, der mittels einer bestimmten Technik die Geburt des kindlichen Kopfes beschleunigt, sowie die Laparelytrotomie. Neben seinen Tätigkeiten war er Mitherausgeber der Zeitschriften "Gemeinsame deutsche Zeitschrift für Geburtskunde" und "Monatsschrift für Geburtskunde und Frauenkrankheiten" sowie "Neue Zeitschrift für Geburtskunde".

Ferdinand August Maria Franz von Ritgen (1787-1867) in Gießen, Medizinprofessor, Gynäkologe und Begründer einer der ersten neun deutschen Geburtshelferschulen. Er entwickelte den sogenannten Ritgen-Hinterdammgriff, der mittels einer bestimmten Technik die Geburt des kindlichen Kopfes beschleunigt, sowie die Laparelytrotomie.
