E certo che essi sono molto piü antichi del contesto in cui oggi li leggiamo : ad esempio, uno di essi era noto a Simonide (fr. 76 Page) che pero ne considerava autore Cleobulo ; un altro a Sofocle (cfr. Ateneo XIII 592 a) ; un altro é citato da Platone (Phaedr. 264 d). Inoltre si puó dire che la Vita Herodotea, eccettuata la prima parte (genealogía e nascita di Omero), sembra composta esclu-sivamente per offrire una cornice narrativa agli epigrammi, e illustrarli.
