Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Acceptable. Reprint. Edward Fitzgerald's English translation of the classic verse by the "astronomer poet of Persia," reprinted from the First Edition by Golden Cockerel Press designed by Christopher Sandford, with his preface & notes. What makes this edition special is… the lovely, tastefully erotic drawings of J. Yunge Bateman, copied from collotypes in that orig. edition. There are 5 of these full-page duo-tone illustrations inside, 1 frontispiece, & a half-page one on the title page. Jacket designed by Lauretta Sellitti. Orig. published in the present edition in 1965, reprinted in 1967, this is the July 1970 edition published by A. S. Barnes in the US. DJ is price-clipped at top of front flap, but orig. price in shillings from the London edition remains at bottom. The DJ is downgraded to only Acceptable due to MANY soiled spots, darkening, & some pen scribbles at top outer-upper edge of front cover. Minor edgewear all around & nicely protected in new archival mylar cover. The slim hardcover book is very clean, binding straight & strong, text pages white, with tanning & a coffee stain to just those in the front matterOur photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have on hand. Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day. Bateman, J. Yung (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. A fine start on a collection of various (and variant) editions of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, most being in no worse than Very Good condition, one in Good condition, some being Near Fine, with special issues and flaws noticed below. The subject and author of the dozen (12) tomes comprising the col…lection, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere in the 11th century from 1025-1050 A.D. His surname Khayyam means "tent-maker" in Persian. The bibliography consulted is Ambrose G. Potter, A Bibliography Of The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam Together With Kindred Matter In Prose And Verse Pertaining Thereto, published by Ingpen and Grant, London, 1929. The collection is comprised of the following: 1) RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (London: Bernard Quaritch, 1872), measuring 218 x 163 mm. (8 5/5" x 6 1/2"). Third Edition. Original publisher's maroon cloth over boards, roan-backed spine. Wear on spine, scuffing to spine head and foot, wear to joints, darkening of edges of cover, but still nearly an excellent copy of interior, sturdy, attractive. sewn-in silk-linen bookmark. [iii], iv-xxiv [1], 1-36 pp.; 2) RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1878), measuring 175 x 130 mm. (6 3/4" x 5"). This is the First published American Edition from the Third London Edition. One of 500 copies printed. Bound in publisher's original reddish-brown cloth over boards, with gilt and black titling and decoration. Bookplate of Church Periodical Club, thus ex-libris, but not ex-library. Dark burgundy endpapers front and rear. Red-stamped page-edges all round. The bibliographer Potter says that this is a variant binding. Minor defects in the form of slight scuffing to tips, spine head and foot, else Near Fine. [3], 4-77 [1] pp.; 3) RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Boston: L.C. Page and Company; London: Macmillan and Company, 1898), measuring 210 x 145 mm. (8 1/4" x 5 3/4"), an edition complete in two volumes. Edited by Nathan Haskell Dole. Multi-Variorum Edition. Bound in the original publisher's white cloth over boards, with red and gilt decoration, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, publisher's red oil-cloth dust jacket, quite fine, sturdy, substantial. Eight illustrations by multiple artists. This edition, "Edward Fitzgerald's Version," so-called for comparing "English, French, German, Italian, and Danish translations" to Fitzgerald's version. Dust jacket spines a bit sunned, otherwise a beautiful copy of the first trade edition of "the first extensive scientific edition," and thus itself a collectible. Volume I: clxxvii, [3], 3-203 pp.; Volume II consists wholly of appendixes, indexes, another nine fine illustrations; frontis matter, 210-655 pp.; 4) THE RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1900), measuring 210 x 153 mm. (8 1/4 x 6"). Translated by Edward FitzGerald, E.H. Whinfield, and Justin Huntly McCarthy. Bound in publisher's navy cloth with quite elaborate gilt decoration, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Fine Introduction by Jessie B. Rittenhouse. Owner's signature at endpaper in the form of a penciled gift notation. Spine rubbed, dulled slightly but still attractive, rear cover a bit grubby, slight dings to board fore-edges, else with a beautiful cloth decoration to front cover. Fine black-and-white engraving of FitzGerald at frontis, captioned and tissue-guarded. xl, 1-244 pp.; 5) BJERREGAARD, C.H.A., Translator. SUFI INTERPRETATIONS OF THE QUATRAINS OF OMAR KHAYYAM AND FITZGERALD. (New York: J.F. Taylor and Company, 1902), printed for them by the Tudor Press, measuring 306 x 240 mm. (12 1/2" x 9 3/8"). Bound most handsomely in the publisher's original gray paper over boards, fore- and tail-edges untrimmed. French-fold text. Spine lettering faded (as on all copies), scuffing to spine head and foot, otherwise clean, unmarked, bright, attractive of interior. Full-page plate at frontis, tissue-protected, with second title page, also with title vignette, with Preface.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. A lot of seventeen (17) different editions of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published variously of publisher, date, and place of publication, and with various illustrators contributing to sumptuous decorations in multiple media and to great effect. The previous owner obtained these in a larger c…ollection of 300 such unique edition exemplars. The lot is comprised of: 1) BRANGWYN, FRANK, Illustrator. RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland: T. N. Foulis, 1911), measuring 175 x 145 mm. (6 7/8" x 5 5/8"). Bound in publisher's original vellum with gilt titling to front cover and spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Eight tipped-in color illustrations by Frank Brangwyn and lovely frontispiece. Slightly bowed boards and very minor soiling thereto, else nearly Fine condition. Uncommonly seen in vellum. 127 pp. and with a page of publisher's additional titles; 2) BULL, RENE, Illustrator. RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Banbury, England: Hodder and Stoughton, [1913]), measuring 275 x 205 mm. (10 7/8" x 8 1/8"). Bound handsomely in brown cloth over boards, front cover being quite elaborately decorated, with gilt titling on spine, red-stamped lettering to front cover. Illustrated by Rene Bull, including tipped-in full-color plate at fronttis illustrating Quatrain VII, protected by present but detached tissue-guard. Sidney L. Nyburg bookplate inside front flap, leading to some shadowing opposite, foxing at endpapers front and rear, protected now in stiff Mylar jacket, light scuffing to tips, edges. Interior is easily Near Fine and features elaborate heads and tails, initials and the like; truly a gorgeous volume. Unpaginated, but like 160 pp. or thereabouts; 3) CARR, HAMZEH, Illustrator. THE RUBAIYAT OF UMAR KHAIYAM. (London: John Lane the Bodley Head Limited, 1924), measuring 257 x 180 mm. (10 1/8" x 7"). Translated from the French of J.B. Nicolas by Frederick Baron Corvo, and edited by Edward Heron-Allen. Bound in tan cloth over boards, with elaborate gilt titling to spine and front cover (note variant spelling, "Umar") and fine illustrations thereto. Complete with uber-scarce original paper dust jacket, illustrated though splits of edges, preserved nicely in thin acetate wrapper. Augmented by 16 plates in color by Hamzeh Carr. Printed with facing French text. Interior volume bright, clean, neat, and attractive. Frontis matter, 193 pp.; 4) DODSON, BERT, Illustrator. SELECTIONS FROM OMAR KHAYYAM'S RUBAIYAT: A PORTFOLIO OF DRAWINGS BY BERT DODSON. (Norwalk, Connecticut: Fairfield Graphics Incorporated, n.d.) 458 x 330 mm. (18 x 13"). Not signed, but probably one of 700 copies printed thus. An unusual item indeed, with 39 numbered plates housed in a folding, envelope-like portfolio with embossed title. An additional 19 black-ink drawings by the illustrator, quite evocative, that augment the printed quatrains. An unusually clean assemblage (though the portfolio is a big soiled and grubby). The illustrations are nearly line-drawings but tilt and totter between Art Deco and Surrealist of appears. The artist, Bert Dodson (born, 1938), illustrated several score children's books, too--at least 80 to 2019; 5) DULAC, EDMUND, Illustrator. RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1909, printed for the publisher by T. and N. Constable, from Edinburgh University Press), measuring 285 x 225 mm. (11 1/4" x 8 7/8"). An unusually scarce First Edition exemplar and with a laid-in notice of an exhibition of Dulac's illustrated works, to be held at the Leicester Galleries (including watercolors for "Omar Khayyam") from 16 October to 20 November 1909. Bound in white cloth over boards and with elaborate gilt decorations and gilt lettering to front cover and spine. Fine, colorful bookplate of Mae Borg at third free endpaper. Decorated endpapers front and rear. Slight forward cock to spine, light scuffing to tips and edges, spine head and foot. Slight soiling to white cloth (as is inevitable), but interior is bright and fre.
