Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: g+ to vg. First edition. Quarto. XVI, [2] (Text), 128pp (Photographs). Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over paper covered boards. First edition of this superb selection from the candid works of photojournalist Gotthard Schuh, with 128 rich full-page and double-page photogravures of everyday people, including his famous "Enfant javanais jouant." Schuh's early work as freelance photojournalist for several magazines, including "Paris Match" and "Life," led him throughout Europe and as far as Indonesia (which resulted in the photobook "Iles des Dieux: Java, Sumatra, Bali" in 1954). From 1941 to 1960 he served as photo editor at "Neuen Zürcher Zeitung" and in 1951 he and Swiss photographers Paul Senn, Werner Bischof and Jakob Tuggener co-founded the College of Swiss Photographers. In this work, Schuh presents the realities of daily life through a selection of his early photographs, including his two most famous: "Enfant javanais jouant" (a boy stretched out playing a game), and "Danseuses sacrées de Bali" (temple dancer), both taken in Indonesia in 1938-39 and first published in "Insel der Götter" (1940). Dust jacket rubbed on corners and at head and tail of spine. Slight age-toning along paper margin. DJ in overall good+, binding and interior in very good condition.

Prima edizione Copia autografata
Softcover. Condizione: g+ to vg. First edition. Quarto. 95, [7]pp. Original glassine over photo-illustrated dust-jacket and stiff wrappers. Front free endpaper inscribed and signed by the author. Photo-illustrated title page. Striking photo-book on the erotic sculpture of India, splendidly illustrated throughout with over 100 velvety heliogravures (many full page). In most cases, carved by hand out of stone, the statues illustrate the degree to which religion and culture was valued. Many human work centuries were spent in the creation of these carvings. They also demonstrate the role that sexual activity and expression had in the religions of India. Unlike the sexually repressive religions of Christianity and Islam, the artwork openly displays the bare human body and humans engaged in all varieties of sexual acts. If you read this book with an eye to appreciating other cultures, then there is no erotic nature to this art, just expressions of life in religions that allowed all aspects of human activity to be displayed. Moderate shelf wear on glassine. Glassine in overall good, dust-jacket, wrappers and interior in very good condition.
