Edward Lear was already drawing "for bread and cheese" by the time he was aged 16 and soon developed into a serious "ornithological draughtsman" employed by the Zoological Society, and from 1832 to 1836 by the Earl of Darby who kept a private menagerie at his estate. In the 19th century parrots were highly prized by the aristocracy and patrons of the arts. Lear's The Parrots, comprised the first illustrations of it's kind from living birds. These hand colored lithographs were offered as very precious sets to 175 subscribers. The Edward Lear Society continues to exist.

Dans la rhétorique de cet art, dans l'Italie de la Contre-Réforme, de Venise à Rome, à Florence, Naples et Bologne, l'observation de la peinture des femmes et leurs manières offrent une certaine unité dans l'esprit de composition dont il conviendra de dégager les marques au sein de l'esthétique baroque. Souvent, un même profil artistique réunit ces femmes qui ont fait de la peinture leur métier, premier geste de transgression hors des maîtres d'atelier. Les usages et les règles apparemment adoptés sont subtilement contournés par des audaces ou des bonheurs d'invention et d'expression. Parmi nos héroïnes, la figure d'Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1652) domine, son art rivalise directement avec celui des hommes et sa réussite conduit à la transgression de sa catégorie sociale, exemple d'une lutte contre l'autorité et la puissance artistique paternelle, contre le confinement réservé aux femmes. Mais Artemisia ne fut pas la seule à affirmer la pensée et le geste de ce « peindre au féminin ». Ce projet nous a porté à mieux comprendre le travail de la Signora, pour mieux se rapporter au contexte qui fut celui de ces artistes femmes depuis Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625), Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614), Fede Galizia (1578-1630), Orsola Maddalena Caccia (1596-1676), Giovanna Garzoni (1600-1670), Virginia da Vezzo (1601-1638) jusqu'à Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665). Contraintes de s'en tenir aux portraits, à la composition symbolique de fruits et de fleurs, elles en font au contraire de puissants instruments de liberté dans l'expression des mystères de la psyché, des vertus au pathos sourd et douloureux, tantôt rejoignant l'héroïsme intime et quotidien, tantôt s'ouvrant à l'ampleur théâtrale qui mêle l'existence à l'Histoire. Ainsi, l'omniprésence du portrait ou de l'autoportrait derrière l'allégorie, la figure mythologique ou la sainte déploie dans cette contrainte une phénoménale présence du naturel. Celui-là même que l'on retrouve sous une forme illusionniste dans les agencements de fruits et de fleurs. Elles étaient filles, femmes ou soeurs de peintres le plus souvent, parfois religieuses. La complexité dans l'appréciation de ce « peindre au féminin », au coeur d'une poétique picturale communément partagée implique de discerner dans l'invention, les dissemblances dans la conception des poses et des gestes, et dans l'expression, la touche et le chromatisme lumineux. Pour trouver la distinction de ces manières de femmes au sein des styles en cours et dans leur milieu de production, il convient d'apporter séparément, dans l'analyse, le concept formel, et l'exercice de la main. De ces femmes peintres sont présentés une cinquantaine de tableaux exceptionnels provenant tantôt de musées prestigieux tels le musée du Louvre, la galerie des Offices, le palais Barberini ou la galerie Borghèse, tantôt de découvertes faites dans de collections privées. Bon nombre de ces tableaux n'ont jamais ou rarement été vus. PAS DE RETOUR.
