Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good+. 1st Edition. Original printed stiff wraps, 82 pages, photo, minor wear. In 1859 on his 21st birthday, Riley and others left their homes in Cass County Missouri for Independence in accompany of Thomas Sublett. They were to rendezvous on Little Blue a few miles south to start their trip to Salt…Lake City. The crew consisted of 36 men. There they received 250 head of cattle to brand and break to pull wagons. Riley tells of their trip and some incidents along the way and of the return trip by Old Fort Laramie and Ft. Kearney. His next trip was to Fort Lyon, Colorado Territory. Has a section on border troubles and Missouri Bushwackers, Quantrel and Kansas Redlegs. His next trip was to Fort Union New Mexico. Riley includes a section on Indian Troubles and another trip to Fort Union. The author's grandson had Riley's original manuscript typed, and added titles to some of the paragraphing, otherwise no other changes were made. It was printed for distribution to the family and friends who may be interested. Mostly likely only a small number were printed, only 4 copies located in universities.

Full title: ALABAMA AS IT IS; OR, THE IMMIGRANT'S AND CAPITALIST'S GUIDE BOOK TO ALABAMA. FURNISHING THE MOST ACCURATE AND DETAILED INFORMATION CONCERNING THE VARIED ELEMENTS OF WEALTH IN ALABAMA, WHETHER OF MINE, FIELD OR FOREST, TOGETHER WITH CAREFULLY PREPARED MAPS AND CHARTS ILLUSTRATIVE OF THE NUMEROUS ADVANTAGES POSSESSED…BY THE STATE. REV. B. F. RILEY, D. D. ADOPTED BY THE STATE BY AN ACT APPROVED FEBRUARY 28, 1887. Second edition (as stated upon title page). i-vi, 7-304 pages (plus covers). Staple-bound paperback: H 22.75cm x L 14.75cm. Original pink paper covers soiled; chips and tears along spine paper and front joint; small dark stains at both covers' lower spine corners caused by rusted binding staple. Foxing and toning along edges; occasional light foxing to interior text pages mostly at upper and lower margins; pictorial front cover's brownish-green border outlines have contributed some associated shadow impressions onto mildly foxed title page; a few leaves towards rear have creased/curled bottom fore-edge corners. Binding staples rusted but firm. Unfortunately lacks frontispiece railroad and county foldout map but retains b/w river system map of which the top folding section has short tearing at gutter margin. Else a good+ copy of an uncommon late Reconstruction era Alabama county-by-county guidebook. With Preface, Note by Commissioner of Agriculture R.F. Kolb, several tables, four b/w national map illustrations (pages 233 and 245-247), foldout "Map of the River System of Alabama" tipped-in between pages 262-263, and Index.
