Deshalb dürfte sie sich eignen, bei Übungen in historischen Seminaren und Socie-täten an unseren Universitäten zu Grunde gelegt zu werden. Jahn's descriptio arcis Athenarum hat mir dabei als Vorbild gedient. An textkritischen Bemerkungen habe ich fast nur Sachliches zu der Ausgabe von Sintenis hinzugefügt. In den Noten bestrebte ich mich, soweit als möglich vollständig zu sein, nur ganz irrelevante Stellen glaubte ich weglassen zu dürfen, habe jedoch auch von solchen gelegentliche Proben angebracht, da in diesen der Mafsstab dafür gegeben ist, welche Teile der älteren Überlieferung später am öftesten wiederholt wurden. Weil es mir nötig scheint, vor allem den Schriftsteller und seine Eigenart nicht aus dem Auge zu verlieren, 'so habe ich eine Reihe von Aufserungen Plutarchs über seine Biographien vorausgeschickt und in dem Commentar selbst alle Stellen angeführt, an denen Plutarch auf dieselben Dinge zu sprechen kommt wie in der Themistoklesbiographie; für die Erkenntnis von Plutarchs schriftstellerischer Individualität scheinen mir die letzteren ebenso wichtig, wie die Varianten der Schreibung für die Entzifferung eines unbekannten Schriftsystemes. Im Texte sind alle jene Stellen klein gedruckt, die zweifellose Äufse-rungen Plutarchs selbst sind oder deren Inhalt auf seiner Autorität allein ruht. Die zahlreichen Nachrichten über den Mauerbau in Athen (zu Plut. Thern. 19) habe ich durch die Tabelle am Ende übersichtlich zu gestalten gesucht; Übereinstimmungen sind in derselben durch gleichen Druck gekennzeichnet. Für Verbesserungen und Nachträge werde ich dankbar sein. Möchte diese Ausgabe sich in den Kreisen, für die sie bestimmt ist, als brauchbar erweisen, sie würde dann eine Sammlung ähnlicher inaugurieren. / Content: The present edition of Plutareh's Themistocles is intended to show by example how far source criticism has come, how far it can come at all. Therefore, it should be suitable to be used as a basis for exercises in historical seminars and societies at our universities. Jahn's descriptio arcis Athenarum has served me as a model. As far as text-critical remarks are concerned, I have added almost only factual information to Sintenis' edition. In the notes, I tried to be as complete as possible, only quite irrelevant passages I believed to be allowed to omit, but have also attached occasional samples of such, since in these is given the Mafsstab for which parts of the older tradition were later repeated most often. Because it seems to me necessary, above all, not to lose sight of the writer and his idiosyncrasy, 'so I have sent a series of essays by Plutarch on his biographies in advance, and in the commentary itself I have given all the passages where Plutarch comes to speak of the same things as in the biography of Themistocles; for the knowledge of Plutarch's authorial individuality, the latter seem to me just as important as the variants of the spelling for the decipherment of an unknown writing system. In the text, all those passages are printed in small letters which are undoubtedly Plutarch's own compositions or whose content rests on his authority alone. The numerous news about the building of the wall in Athens (to Plut. Thern. 19) I have tried to arrange clearly by the table at the end; correspondences are marked in the same print. are marked in the same table by the same print.
