Prima rara edizione di questo importante e fondamentale trattato di logica del barone belga Frederic de Reiffenberg, illustre storico e filoso noto per la sua difesa dell' eclettismo filosofico, fortemente influenzato dal pensatore francese Victor Cousin che rifiutava l' idea che un singolo sistema filosofico potesse contenere tutta la verità, e per il suo ruolo di primo piano nelle istituzioni culturali del Belgio del XIX secolo. Nel 1822 ottenne la cattedra di filosofia presso l' allora Università di Lovanio, tra le più prestigiose dell' epoca, dove insegnò logica, metafisica e storia della filosofia fino al 183 Un approfondito corso teorico con una preziosa prospettiva storica sull' evoluzione del pensiero razionale, in cui percorre la storia della disciplina dalle sue origini nell' antica Grecia, in particolare l' eredità di Aristotele, fino ai suoi sviluppi nell'epoca classica e premoderna. L' autore definisce la logica come la scienza delle leggi della ragione nella sua ricerca della verità; analizza le facoltà dell' anima e i meccanismi del ragionamento. Egli contrappone la logica pura, orientata alla verità scientifica, alla retorica, che accusa di poter deviare verso la manipolazione o la falsità. L' opera riflette l' approccio accademico del XIX secolo, dove la logica non era ancora puramente formale o matematica, ma unita all' epistemologia e allo studio dei processi mentali, descrivendo in dettaglio il funzionamento delle facoltà della mente, i meccanismi del giudizio e dell' argomentazione e la struttura formale tipica dei ragionamenti logici e deduttivi per la ricerca della verità, i sillogismi aristotelici. Il testo, celebre per la sua ricca sezione bibliografica, unisce un corso teorico sulla disciplina a una ricca e fondamentale trattazione storiografica e bibliografica dei testi di logica pubblicati fino al suo tempo, rendendolo uno dei primi e più completi manuali di storiografia della logica dell' Ottocento che traccia lo sviluppo della logica formale fino alla sua epoca, diventando un testo di riferimento nelle università europee del XIX secolo. Per Reiffenberg, lo studio della storia della filosofia non era un semplice esercizio accademico, ma lo strumento fondamentale per far progredire la conoscenza umana. Sosteneva la necessità di analizzare criticamente i sistemi del passato per estrapolarne gli elementi validi e rigettare gli errori, combinandoli in un quadro unitario e armonico. Proprio in quanto storico, poligrafo e filosofo d' impronta eclettica, Reiffenberg organizza lo sviluppo della logica, che definisce, la scienza delle leggi alle quali sottoponiamo la nostra ragione nella ricerca della verità, attraverso una rigorosa suddivisione cronologica e concettuale, strutturata in grandi epoche. Coerentemente con la filosofia del XIX secolo, Reiffenberg non vede la logica come un sistema puramente simbolico o matematico, la rivoluzione della logica moderna di George Boole e Gottlob Frege avverrà pochi decenni dopo, ma come una disciplina intrinsecamente legata alla psicologia cognitiva e alle leggi dello spirito umano.
