This book delves into the motivations and consequences that characterized Prussia's volatile relationship with France during the Napoleonic era. The author provides a comprehensive analysis of how the interplay between these two European powers shaped Prussia's strategies during times of both conflict and alliance. Exploring the political, administrative, military, and civil spheres, the book offers a rich tapestry of insights into the diplomatic complexities, troop movements, economic policies, and societal changes that defined this transformative period. By examining the challenges and opportunities Prussia faced, the author sheds new light on the intricacies of international relations and the resilience of national identity in the crucible of war and diplomacy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near fine. Limited Edition. One of 225 copies, unnumbered, folio size, 24 pp., in French. Written by Frederick the Great (1712-1786), king of Prussia from 1740 until his death, this letter contemplates suicide as an alternative to surrendering in battle; the king had just experienced a devastating defeat at Kolin during the Seven Years' War, as well as the death of his beloved mother (per Mardersteig). The epistle, written to his close friend Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens (1704-1771), is a poignant examination of heartfelt and human desperation. Printed by the Officinia Bodoni, a highly-regarded private press owned and operated by Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977), the book exhibits a gorgeous binding of vellum and paste-paper, with intricate patterns carved into the deep blue paper; the Press was known for its superb standard in printing and bookmaking, often doing commission work for other publishers, such as the Limited Editions Club and Faber and Faber. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter vellum with blue paste-paper boards, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page in red and black, some signatures unopened; Bodoni Catania types, Fabriano handmade paper, folio size (12" by 8.5"), pagination: [1-2] 3-22 [23] [1 colophon], one of 225 copies, unnumbered. Please note the text is in French. Bookseller's ticket on the rear paste-down, from Paul Elder & Co., San Francisco. Housed in a slipcase covered in orange paper. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a bare hint of rubbing to the corners, light rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards, and a few rubbed spots to the pastepaper (we believe all of this simply from the slipcase being a tad too small), else fine. The slipcase is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean but for the hint of a stray mark or two, some light rubbing to the extremities and light sunning to the edges and spine. ___CITATION: Mardersteig no. 10. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. L (Mecklembourgeois) / Fondateur de l'Institution Biblique Stéréotype / de Paris / Membre . . . / . . . / à Paris le 20 Juin 1813.'' --- Lutheran Pastor Frédéric Léo from Mecklenburg-Germany was sent as 'pastor-suffragan' of the Lutheran Consistory to Paris in 1811 to spread the protestant view of christianity in the catholic heart of France, and with the support of Frederic Louis Crownprince of Mecklenburg - to whom he dedicated this particular bibliophile copy - raised funds for the massprint of bibles (not only) from the crownprince's former brother-in-law Tsar Alexander I., who himself founded of the 'Bible Society of Russia'. Together with the famous french printer Firmin Didot, who perfectionized the stereotype-printing process to produce a very large number of pages from 1 plate in lasting good quality and economically successful, Léo started the mass-production of Ostervald's New Testament in 1813 which in quality and number by far exceeded earlier stereotype bible-editions in Germany (Canstein/Halle) and England (Stanhope/Cambridge), although not many seem to have survived resp. can be found in trade. This was the initial moment for the mass-production and wide-spread of printed bibles, affordable for 'everyone'. Encouraged by his success in 1816 Léo also initiated a 'Catholic Society for the Distribution of the New Testament' to publish an edition according to the version of Sacy until his 'Institution Biblique Stéréotype' was shut down by the Vatican's condemnation of Bible Societies in 1825. The publishing of protestant as well as catholic bibles also made him a Pioneer of ecumenical christianity. . . - BINDING SLIGHTLY RUBBED, rearpanel slightly scratched, bottom of frontjoint slightly split for 2-cm; A BEAUTIFUL COPY IN ALMOST BEST CONDITION AND WITH THE BEST POSSIBLE ASSOCIATION (until a dedication copy to Alexander I. in his private binding may be discovered); A MILESTONE IN PRINTING-HISTORY. . .
