Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Frederick Marns (illustratore). Book Club Edition. Since it was first published in 1789, this delightful collection of letters by the country parson, Gilbert White, describing the flora and fauna of his Hampshire village, had gone through around 150 different editions before The Gilbert White Museum commissioned this new edition. This book carries a foreword by Lord Selborne, a heartfelt introduction by David Attenborough, reproductions of Thomas Bewick bird engravings, and ten remarkable pencil drawings by Frederick Marns. I was lucky enough to have watched this artist/designer/hand-letterer (I think he preferred that term over "calligrapher"), work on a couple of occasions. Whether he was addressing an envelope, or writing an owner's name in gold ink on the lid of a fantastically valuable grand piano, his work was exact and meticulous to a degree that inspired awe and disbelief. The ten drawings in this book took him a year to complete, going out to the location each morning with 200 sharpened pencils in his bag so that he didn't have to waste time sharpening them when he worked. A limited edition of 150 copies, signed by Marns, Lord Selborne and David Attenborough was also published. This copy is the Book Club Associates printing of the first edition, published simultaneously, or very shortly after, the first trade edition. There is a hint of yellowing to top edges, but a near fine copy in good dust jacket with worn and nicked edges, laminate coming off on rear gutter, and a creased tear with small loss at base of front panel. I also have some prints of some of Frederick Marns' drawings from this book. Use the "Contact Seller" link to make inquiries.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Calligraphy and illustration by Frederick Marns (illustratore). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, very slight yellowing to extremities, price clipped, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall in vg++ condition. 159pp, illustrated. When he was killed in action, Edward Thomas was mourned as an essayist, biographer and one of the foremost critics of his time, but his reputation as a poet had not yet been established. The discovery of his talent for poetry, sparked off by his meeting with the American poet Robert Frost on the eve of the First World War, was a turning point in his life. After sixteen years of frustration and self-doubt as a writer of prose, he had found a new and more confident voice, and the outbreak of war brought release from the demand for reviews and commissioned work so that he was free to write as he felt moved. A fine biographical essay by Eliane Wilson introduces the 80 poems chosen to reflect the poet's deep love of England and his affinity with nature. The beauty of the words have been enhanced by the fine calligraphy and sensitive pencil drawings of Frederick Marns. The endpapers reproduce the memorial windows at Steep and Eastbury, engraved by Laurence Whistler, dedicated to Edward and Helen Thomas, his wife.

The book carried a foreword by Lord Selborne, a heartfelt introduction by David Attenborough, reproductions of Thomas Bewick bird engravings, and ten remarkable pencil drawings by Frederick Marns. I was lucky enough to have watched this artist/designer/hand-letterer (I think he preferred that term over "calligrapher") work on a number of occasions. Whether he was filling in a name on a certificate, addressing an envelope, signing a book or a print, writing an owner's name in gold ink on the lid of a hugely valuable Steinway grand piano, his work was exact and meticulous to a degree that inspired awe and disbelief.
