Burslem, Jan. 1841') and pictorial endpapers. Red cloth lettered and d…ecorated in gilt on the spine and front cover; edges speckled red; a fine copy. A presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author to historian Iris Nesdale: 'If this book was to have a dedication, it would read - "For Iris Nesdale, who prompted and inspired the editing and compilation." My sincere thanks for your generous assistance. Geoff Manning. August 1985'. The first and only edition of these memoirs; number 27 of 260 copies signed by Peter Cotton (Managing Director of Gillingham Printers). 'Frost's reminiscences recount his experiences as a labourer, gardener, shepherd, cowherd, drover, miner, house-repairer, builder, contractor and, ultimately, architect with such well-known buildings to his credit as Brougham Place Church and Whinham College (now the Lutheran Seminary). He had tendered for the construction of the Overland Telegraph, his tender being rejected, apparently unfairly . There is an artlessness about his reminiscences but this is due to his truthfulness and sincerity' (from the foreword by Sir Walter Crocker). Signed.

Elaborately inscribed by Frost to an 'old old friend' from his time in England with the Dymock Poets in rural Gloucestershire just before the First World War. Writing on the first flyleaf Frost has inscribed the book 'For Robin Haines of Gloucester from his old old friend Robert Frost once of not far from Gloucester, Amherst Mas…s, November 27 1937'. Robin Haines was the son of the Gloucester solicitor John W Haines who became close to Frost during his Gloucestershire years - Haines' son Robin would have been a baby when Frost first met him so the poets's phrase 'old old friend' should probably be taken as a joke. Frost's affection for Gloucestershire was not a joke; this period was formative for him in his poetic practice and brought intense friendships with other young literary men, notably Edward Thomas and Lascelles Abercrombie. An excellent association copy. Large octavo attractively bound in green buckram; small bump to the top edge of the text block; internally very good. In a good jacket; toned with a small chip at the head of the spine and spotting to the blank lower panel of the jacket. Please contact Christian White Rare Books Ltd for more information or images of this item.

Unbound. Condizione: Very Good. Edition Deluxe. Title page, Introductory page, Index and 75 plates (complete), all loosely housed in a blue cloth gilt portfolio. Portfolio with some staining and wear and about very good; check marks by the index of prints, else the contents are very near fine. Nearly all of the plates have been…signed by the engravers; and 50 of the plates have been Signed by the artists including W.H. Gibson, Thomas Moran, Mary Hallock Foote, F. Hopkinson Smith, W.H. Lowe, A.B. Frost, J.D. Smillie and many others. Seldom found complete, this selection purports to be the best of the 600 illustrations from the set of Longfellow's works; but just as likely the determination was made based upon the overrun of the prints still available. One of 500 numbered sets, this is set #4.
