Ausgehend von der über alle Maßen starken Kanzlerschaft Konrad Adenauers haben sich die Politikwissenschaftler die Frage gestellt, worin der Erfolg der Ära Adenauer begründet liegt. War es allein die Person Adenauers, die so prägend für die politische Kultur und das politische System war, waren es die günstigen Bedingungen des Anfangs der Republik oder doch eher die weitreichenden institutionellen Voraussetzungen, die das Grundgesetz dem Kanzler an die Hand gab Es gibt in der Literatur verschiedene Argumentationsstränge, die sich zwar in sich konsistent und auch relativ scharf abgrenzbar voneinander verfolgen lassen, die jedoch allein nicht im Ganzen das komplexe System der Kanzlerdemokratie vereinen können.
