Baist studierte Romanistik, Geschichte und Germanistik in Gießen und bei Conrad Hofmann in München. Er promovierte 1880 in Erlangen bei Karl Vollmöller hispanistisch mit 'Alter und Textueberlieferung der Schriften Don Juan Manuels' (Halle a.S. 1880), war dort ab 1884 Assessor an der Bibliothek und habilitierte sich 1889 bei Hermann Varnhagen über 'Die Arabischen Hauchlaute und Gutturalen im Spanischen' (Erlangen 1889). Er war von 1891 bis 1918 als Nachfolger von Fritz Neumann ordentlicher Professor für romanische Philologie in Freiburg. Im Amtsjahr 1909/10 war er dort auch Rektor." Old center crease now mellowed, small ink stamps in margins. Now housed in a removable, archival sleeve with acid-free mat backing. A leaf from Baist's Real Estate Atlas of Surveys of… Seattle, Wash Complete in One Volume. Compiled and Published From Official Records, Private Plans and Actual Surveys, which were published in three or four editions between 1905 and 1912, this from the 1908 edition. Thus, many of the "man-over-nature" efforts initiated by city engineer R. H. Thompson, including the straightening of the Duwamish River, removal of Denny Hill, creation of the Montlake Cut, etc., had not taken effect. This plate shows the unfinished Canal Waterway from Harbor Island to Lake Washington near Spokane Street. An attractive map indicating platted divisions of property and, in the instance of larger pieces of land, property ownership. In short, the map provides a fascinating glimpse of local land speculation at a time when Seattle's population, fueled by the Alaska gold rush, quadrupled. If ordered to be shipped, the map will be rolled and sent in a sturdy shipping tube.
