Following the defeat of Emperor Napoleon III in September 1870, the French Second Empire swiftly collapsed. In its stead rose a Third Republic at war with Prussia, which laid siege to Paris for four months. A hotbed of working-class radicalism, France's capital was primarily defended during this time by the often politicized and radical troops of the National Guard rather than regular Army troops. In February 1871 Adolphe Thiers, the new chief executive of the French national government, signed an armistice with Prussia that disarmed the Army but not the National Guard. ***Soldiers of the Commune's National Guard killed two French army generals, and the Commune refused to accept the authority of the French government. [Ca 1850]. Dimensions : 15 x 15 x 2,2 cm. Signature dans l'angle inférieur droit et au dos, cachet de la maison Kieszling à Paris, avec la mention "Déposé". Fente verticale sur environ 5 cm au milieu du bloc. Beau bois gravé représentant l'attaque du poste du château d'eau de la place du Palais-Royal à Paris, le 24 février 1848. Il s'agit d'une variation d'une scène de la Révolution de 1848, dont Jules Gaildrau donna plusieurs versions. Le Musée Carnavalet conserve les gravures de deux de ces versions, l'une ayant servi à illustrer l'Histoire anecdotique illustrée de la Révolution de 1848 par Lermina, Faure et Spoll (Paris, 1868), l'autre imprimée par Lemercier et distribuée par Leclère. Le château d'eau de la place du Palais-Royal fut pris par les insurgés et détruit par un incendie pendant la Révolution de 1848.

Questa stampa rappresenta un luogo di culto molto importante, il Santuario di Notre-Dame de La Salette nel territorio del comune di La Salette-Fallavaux, dipartimento dell'Isère. La chiesa fu edificata dopo che la Vergine Maria apparve a due giovani pastori Maximin Giraud e Mélanie Calvat il 19 settembre 1846 lasciando loro un messaggio di conversione. I lavori iniziarono nel 1852 per concludersi nel 1865. Questo luogo di pellegrinaggio mariano situato a 1800 metri sul livello del mare è l'unico edificio ad abitare la valle. Infatti, immersa nel paesaggio montuoso, tra le cime delle Alpi che svettano verso il cielo, vediamo al centro illuminata dai raggi del sole la grande chiesa contraddistinta da una facciata austera, affiancata da due torri. Lo spettatore è invitato a camminare lungo la strada, in basso sulla sinistra, e a percorrere silenziosamente questo cammino sacro. Nella stampa la valle è popolata da centinaia di figure di pellegrini, contadini, nobili ma anche sacerdoti e vari fedeli con gonfaloni con immagini della Vergine che si dirigono verso il santuario, certamente si tratta della raffigurazione del pellegrinaggio che ogni anno si rinnova per celebrare l'apparizione della Vergine. Il foglio, molto decorativo, è conservato nella sua cornice originale dorata. Impressione eccellente, dai neri intensi e puntuali contrasti chiaroscurali. Ottimo stato di conservazione. L'atmosfera grigio-argentea dona solennità alla composizione. In basso, oltre l'immagine, a sinistra "Jules Gaidrau, lith." al centro il titolo, e a destra "Lith G. Paulon, rue de la Harpe, 92, Paris".
