This and the books to follow have a prototype in the Atlante fotográfico, or Photo-Atlas, of the Duomo of Modena which came out ten years ago and marked Panini's début in the world of art-publishing. The format of that book has been the object of long and careful reconsideration in numerous discussions, to which many individuals not listed in the acknowledgements contributed help and advice. Among these I should especially like to thank Adriano Peroni, Daniele Benati and Massimo Dolcini. -- The purpose of the series, as is declared in its general title, is to illustrate the 'Wonders of Italy1 as rigorously as possible. The long Vatican Gallery, with its maps representing the country at the height of its glory towards the end of the 16th century, might well figure as an emblem of the whole project. -- This is a new kind of art-publication, in that it revolutionises the concept of the illustration. In place of the usual select number of plates included as illustrations to the text, we offer the reader a series of images that are the result of carefully planned photographic surveys, aiming to transport the entire historic monument onto his table. The camera reveals remote or hidden details invisible to the naked eye and fixes on the page a complete sequence of images calculated to satisfy both the aesthetic sense of the general reader and the needs of the scholar. -- These volumes, then, are a new sort of Atlas ', capable of delineating a world that is often difficult of access and of guiding those who wish to visit it step by step. Commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII in 1580, the Gallery offers a 'walking-tour' of Italy's history through forty richly decorated and detailed map frescoes of Italy and its regions. In this volume, each of the forty maps is thoroughly discussed and splendidly illustrated with 143 pages in color. The maps were designed by Egnazio Danti, a Dominican monk and well known cosmographer and mathematician invited by Pope Gregory XIII to leave the University of Bologna and settle in Rome to undertake the decoration of the Gallery.

Voluta da papa Gregorio XIII, terminata nel 1580 sotto la direzione del geografo Egnazio Danti, la Galleria delle Carte geografiche in Vaticano è il più vasto ciclo pittorico di figurazioni cartografiche esistente al mondo e una delle più straordinarie imprese artistiche del tardo Cinquecento. Lunga centoventi metri e larga sei, comprende quaranta tavole ad affresco raffiguranti le regioni italiane, le grandi città portuali e alcune isole minori, mentre sul soffitto è dipinto un ciclo di "miracoli" e scene edificanti legate alle località sottostanti, composto di 51 scene. Il quadro che emerge dal ciclo cartografico della Galleria è quello dell'Italia alla fine del XVI secolo. Una realtà politica ancora disomogenea ma anche un'entità geografica e concettuale già precocemente unitaria, cementata e unificata, quale patria designata della Chiesa, da una visione provvidenziale della storia.
