Wonderful survey of caricature, with wide cross-section of top caricaturists of the day and of subjects/victims from all spheres of life -- politics, entertainment, etc. Also quite international in its selection -- not just the leading suspects of America and the U.K. The prefatory text pages have moderate to heavy foxing, and some of the plates are foxed as well -- mostly the ones with similar paper stock to the text pages. The majority of the plates are clean. The green of the green cloth binding is washed out mostly around the perimeter of the boards. …

Charles Holme (1848 1923) was an English journalist and art critic, founding editor of The Studio from 1893. Holme himself worked in the silk and wool trades, trading with Turkestan, India and China in the 1870s. He subsequently opened offices in Japan visiting the country in 1889 with the painter Alfred East and Arthur Lasenby Liberty and his wife. He served as vice-president of the Japan Society, and was a recipient of the Order of the Rising Sun in 1902 Following his retirement from trade in 1892, Holme founded The Studio: an illustrated magazine of fine and applied art, a magazine dedicated to fine arts and decorative arts, giving roughly equal weight to each. The first issue appeared in April 1893. The first serving editor was Joseph Gleeson White (Lewis Hind had acted as editor for four months before the launch of the magazine). In 1895 Holme took over as editor himself, although Gleeson White continued to contribute. Holme retired as editor in 1919 for reasons of health, and was succeeded by his son Charles Geoffrey Holme, who was already the editor of special numbers and year-books of the magazine.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. None. 1st Edition. This offering is a vintage copy of Disappearing London written by E. Beresford Chancellor and edited by Geoffrey Holme. The book was published by "The Studio" Limited in 1927 and appears to be a First Edition though it is not specifically stated as such. It is a hard cover book and has no dust jacket. The book is in very good + condition. It DOES appear to have been rebound in nice sturdy cloth boards. It looks as if it's an ex-library copy but there are no markings whatsoever to say that it is. It is 9 1/2" by 12" and has, perhaps, 40 pages and consists of an Introduction by E. Beresford Chancellor and then about 30 tipped in "pen & ink" illustrations by various artists whose names appear to be given on the guard page which protects each illustration. It really is in great condition for a 100 year old book and/or any lover of illustrations of older buildings is going to love it. It's a great look at how it used to be . . . in more ways than one.
