Soft cover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. George Hugnet in collaboration with Marcel Duchamp. Galerie Jeanne Bucher, 1936. The book consists of twenty poems-decoupages by George Hugnet, each accompanied by a collage or a 19th century vignette, and the original embossed front cover by Marcel Duchamp, bound with Japanese-style hand sewed threads. Each page features text and photographs sourced from mass-media sources, combined to create erotic writings and images. The book is limited to 270 copies, of which this one is N 206, and is one of the poet's most well-known works. The front cover by Duchamp features a photograph of his 1921 readymade Why Not Sneeze, Rose Sélavy (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1950-134-75a e). For the elaborate typography of the title, Duchamp appropriated the style of Jean Midolle's alphabet lapidaire monstre , including names of several champions of surrealism (rather than writers and musicians, as Midolle did) in each letter. The front cover is detached and worn at the edges, with missing pieces at the top. The central design and graphics remain in tact.
