Miller's regiment record on front free endpaper; tears and/or some associated rippling at bottom margins of pages 35-42; corners of pages 53-54 and 395-396 creased from past fold-ins; unfortunate ink underlining found on pages 387-392, and 399 but with no other such markings readily apparent upon a cursory perusal and otherwise interior pages are mostly quite clean. Binding is firm. Still an attractive copy. With b/w illustrations and photographs as well as unpaged foldout b/w map between pages 258-259. Two early owners' signatures on the front flyleaf appear to read "E. F. Gooding / To C. C. Elliott / Nov. 1918." There is brown staining along the top edge of the text block throughout. The map is entitled "Map of the Yellowstone National Park" and it measures 23.5" x 18" plus margins. It is printed in a light greenish tint and all bodies of water are printed in blue. CONDITION: Good, lightly worn at extremities, inner hinge cracked and slightly sprung, but covers still firmly attached, lacking front free end paper, two 1" tears in frontis.; map very good, recently reinforced with Japanese tissue and good for the long haul. First edition. An account of the author's trip to Yellowstone in June of 1885 in the company of his wife and daughter. Part narrative and part guide-book, it includes such chapters as "The Yellowstone Park and How to Reach It," "The Railroad Journey," "Our Outfit and Departure," "An Elk Hunt," "The Cattle Ranges," "The Former Inhabitants of the Park," and so on. There are numerous chapters devoted to the salient features of the Park, such as the Mammoth Hot Springs, the Middle Falls of the Gardner, and the Great Canon of the Yellowstone. Top fore-edge corner of the front free endpaper cut out. Two contemporary inscriptions on the front flyleaf. The large folded map has some splitting at the folds (longest split measures 5") and a dime sized chip in the top blank margin. The author undertook this journey in June, 1885, along with his wife and eldest daughter, who was the age of seventeen. In regards to this journey Wingate states at the opening of this account, "If I had been going to Africa instead of to the Yellowstone, I could scarcely have had more trouble in obtaining reliable information in regard to the journey; and while I have undertaken, for the benefit of friends, to write such an account of it as my time will permit, I do so with the hope that it may perchance relieve others contemplating such an excursion from some of the difficulties that I experienced, in trying to learn what was to be done and what avoided." Remington & Sons stamp dated Sept. 19 1872 on first prelim. table of contents, on illustration between pages 26-7 [twice] and previous owner's name [Mr. Borroughs Jr. at Wells Fargo Co.] also on front prelim. George Wood Wingate, a veteran of a New York regiment during the Civil War, drew up rules for systematic rifle practice by Company A, 22d regiment, New York National Guard in 1867. " The publication of these rules (the first of the kind to be formulated in the United States) led to the organization (in 1871) of the National Rifle Association of America, of which he was first secretary and later president from 1886 to 1900." Some slight wear to spine ends and upper tips, else a very nice copy of the rare first edition of this manual. Book is square, tightly bound and unmarked internally, but for stamps mentioned above. A nice association copy of an important work in the history of American firearms. Very good.…
