Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Preface -- The Journal which Gibbon began to write on the 4th of August 1761, when he was a captain in the Hampshire militia, and which he kept, on and off, for the next three years until his arrival at Rome on the 2nd of October 1764, was among the papers that, after his death, were sent from Lausanne to Lord Sheffield, his chief executor. -- In his will Gibbon had expressed the desire that some at least of his manuscripts should be published, and entrusted his executors with the necessary selection. Lord Sheffield took upon himself the delicate task. When he had to decide whether the Journal was to be included in the contemplated edition of his friends posthumous works, he felt he might give the public, if not the complete text of what was a private and motley Diary, at least such extracts as formed an account of Gibbons literary occupations. These extracts he gave in the second volume of the Miscellaneous Works (1796). He used a few other passages as notes to the Memoirs of my Life and Writings which he composed by combining into a single narrative the autobiographical fragments also found among the papers sent from Lausanne. Quarto, bound in original full vellum with a gilt-lettered spine, printed on Millbourn hand-made paper, top edge gilt, frontispiece, illustrated. One of 105 numbered copies, this is number 2. Presentation copy, inscribed by the editor in the year of publication on the limitation page, "May this copy of Gibbon's Italian Journal convey to the owner Allan Ogilvie, of Montrose, the gratitude of the editor for the interest taken in his work. G. Bonnard. May 1961." In very good condition with light soiling and toning, in the original glassine wrapper. Edited by Georges A. Bonnard. Edward Gibbon (1737 to 1794) was the greatest historian of the English Enlightenment, celebrated above all for The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, one of the supreme achievements of eighteenth-century prose. This volume prints the journal he kept during the Italian journey of 1764, the very tour on which, as he famously recalled, the idea of his great history first came to him as he sat musing amid the ruins of the Capitol in Rome while barefooted friars sang vespers in the Temple of Jupiter. Edited by the Gibbon scholar Georges A. Bonnard and printed in a tiny hand-made-paper edition, it is a treasured record of the origins of one of the monuments of Western historical writing. …
