Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition, Special Edition. The sole printing published by The Teitan Press, USA in 2011. There was no UK edition. This is number 'XXXV111' of a limited edition of only 93 specially bound copies with a leather spine, blue cloth and slipcased. The limitation page also bears the four signatures of the contributors as issued in this deluxe edition. The edition was published in a total limitation of 1,023 numbered copies, comprising : 930 cloth-bound copies, and 93 specially bound, signed copies (numbered I-XCIII). A near Fine copy with some slight toning to the leather spine. Clean internally. A scarce and highly desirable Teitan Press production, combining 'Golden Dawn' history, Crowley scholarship, and reflections on Buddhism by figures closely associated with Gerald Yorke. Colour frontispiece by Austin Osman Spare, and 16 pages of black and white illustrations. A series of 20 essays by Gerald Yorke, who for four years was one of Aleister Crowley's closest followers, and remained a lifelong friend. Although in later life he embraced Buddhism, Yorke was one of the handful of people who laboured to preserve the legacy of 'The Beast' after his death in 1947, and through his work as a publisher's advisor he was also instrumental in the publication of many of the most important works of his times on the occult, yoga and Buddhism. Yorke's profound practical as well as theoretical knowledge of these subjects is reflected in these essays, some of which are published here for the first time. They are accompanied by a biographical Introduction by Keith Richmond, a Reminiscence by Timothy d'Arch Smith, and a revised version of Yorke's Crowley Bibliography by Clive Harper. The book concludes with a lengthy Interview with Gerald Yorke by David Tibet, undertaken shortly before Yorke's death in 1983. Rarely encountered in this signed, specially bound state, and such exceptional condition overall. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Author(s).

Hardbound. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. British journalist Yorke travelled widely in China between 1930 and 1932, as a correspondent for Reuters reporting on the momentous events that were occurring at that time. Despite his relatively short stay in China, the extent of his travels and the intensity of his focus on understanding China, the Chinese, their politics and religions resulted in this valuable account of the times. Travelling by pony, rail, bus, sampan and on foot, Yorke's first-hand account acquaints the reader with the struggles between the Communist and Nationalist forces, as well as the conditions of day-to-day life that the Chinese endured. Following Yorke's return to Britain he played an important role in the popularization of Buddhism in the English speaking world. Spine a little darkened; binding firm. Small brown stains on the front edges of a few front and rear pages, not affecting text. Remainder of pages clean and unmarked. 334 pp., 8 b&w photos, 1 col. fold-out map, bibliography. Size: 20 x 15 cm.
