The edition was published in a total limitation of 1,023 numbered copies, comprising: ? 930 cloth-bound copies, and ? 93 specially bound, signed copies (numbered I-XCIII), of which this is 32 (XXXII). ? Binding: cloth binding with leather spine and sharp gilt lettering, in excellent condition though slight colouration from light. There is a small mark on the leather of the spine at the bottom right corner, visible on very close inspection - see image. No other blemishes or wear. ? Slipcase: Original publisher's slipcase, clean, sharp, and unworn. ? Pages: Internally pristine throughout. No foxing, marks, inscriptions, or handling wear. Re-issue of the rare 1935 first edition, very good in dustwrapper though fore-edge slightly spotted; pp. 334+viii; with a folding route map and 8 photo plates. Neat personal inscription 1941 on front endpaper, otherwise unmarked. An Eton and Cambridge scholar, soldier and writer, Yorke was a Reuters correspondent in China 1930-1932. He travelled from Peking through Shansi, Fukien, Kiangsi, Szechwan reporting on the Japanese invasion, the fall of Jehol and Manchuria, on the Communist Red Defence Army and Mao Tse-tung's rise as leader of the Communist forces. In Kiangsi he travelled with Peter Fleming, then reporting for the Times, and followed the progress of Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist force. An excellently written account of these revolutionary years that transformed China.
