A gorgeous and large format work on Tuscan painting, beginning with Guido da Siena, and considering all the great painters of Florence, such as Buffalmaco, Cimabue, Giotto, Paolo Uccello, Andrea Verrocchio, Masaccio, Fra fifilppo Lippi, Andrea del Castagno, Pollaiolo, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Andrea del Sarto, Antonio Tempesta, Giuseppe Grisoni, etc. Carlo Lasinio (1759-1838) was responsible for many of the engravings. Ilustrado com uma gravura em anterrosto no primeiro volume e 120 gravuras de página inteira numeradas de I a LX intercaladas no texto, encontrando-se 60 gravuras em cada um dos volumes, com a dimensão gráfica de cerca de 34x25 cm. Obra impressa a duas colunas sobre papel de linho de grande qualidade e muito encorpado, na impressão foram utilizados caractéres redondos (muito esmaltados) para o texto italiano e caractéres itálicos ou cursivos no texto francês. A magnífica qualidade das obras de arte dos pintores toscanos, a partir das quais se abriram as gravuras, transformaram esta esplendorosa impressão num verdadeiro monumento da arte tipográfica do século XVIII. Apresenta uma gravura em anterrosto (desenhada por Giuseppe Fabbrini e gravada por Carlo Lasinio, em 1791) que representa a deusa Minerva, chamando o génio da Pintura que está assente sobre uma coluna Toscana, encontrando-se acima as alegorias da Aurora e do Tempo. Segue-se um magnífico frontíspicio tipográfico alegórico gravado, ilustrado com uma tarja decorativa em esquadria e a vinheta heráldica de um leão levando uma bandeira com uma flor de iris germânica (ou giaggiolo em italiano), símbolo da cidade de Florença. As gravuras são da autoria, entre outros, dos desenhadores: Giuseppe Pera, Carlo Bozzolini e Francesco Gallardo e foram gravadas por Giovanni Francisco Ravenet, Marco Lastri (1731-1811), Giuseppe Bardi, Niccolo? Pagni, Carlo Lasinio (1759-1838), Matteo Carboni, Ferdinando Gregori (1743-1804), Gaetano Vascellini (1745-1805) e Cosomo Colombini (entre outros). A obra foi adornada com belas capitulares e vinhetas alegóricas desenhadas por Campiglia e abertas por Pazzi. O texto é impresso a duas colunas e adornado com espectaculares vinhetas gravadas com o retrato de cada um dos artistas em oval à cabeça do texto. As vinhetas em geral são assinadas C. L. Fecit, contendo o nome e as datas de nascimento e morte dos artistas. Obra bilingue - italiano e francês - em colunas paralelas, com as biografias dos pintores da Toscânia, cada uma com gravura reproduzindo uma das suas obras-primas de pintura. Os dois volumes apresentam, respectivamente, dedicatórias aos mecenas das artes que impulsionaram e patrocionaram esta edição, nomeadamente no primeiro volume, o Cavaleiro Giovani Macpherson [aliás Sir John Macpherson, Governador Geral de Bengala, na Índia e protagonista da Guerra dos Maratas]. O segundo volume foi patrocionado pelo Marquês Fabio Ferone, dono da obra " Narciso al Fonte " (do pintor Benedeto Luti) que se encontrava no seu palácio em Florença e que está reproduzida no fólio 114. As gravuras foram abertas em chapa de metal. O processo de impressão varia, sendo no entanto sempre elegantíssimo, com a gravação efectuada a negro, a verde (vide fólios VI, XIV e XVIII) e a tinta sanguínea sobre papel alvo ou sobre papel azul (dependendo do detalhe desejado pelo gravador). As gravuras são de grande complexidade no acabamento gráfico, como por exemplo a gravura do fólio 47 gravada simultaneamente por dois gravadores Carlo Lasinio e Giovani Bata, tendo o primeiro aberto a água-forte e segundo terminado a buril. Constitui-se esta obra como um exemplo significativo, ou "estado-da-arte", da impressão ?a cores? do século XVIII. Segundo Moreni I, 509: 'Cada um dos volumes desta obra contém 60 items de pintores Toscanos, escrito em italiano. Obra promovida por Lastri e traduzida para o francês pelo Sr. Bartholomew Renard [?]? Obra monumental da gravura setecentista, contendo as reproduções das pinturas e frescos dos autores italianos naturais da Toscânia, ou Etrúria, desde a Idade Média até à data da publicação desta obra. As reproduções pretendem ser a amostra mais significativa da obra de cada artista encontrada na Toscânia, ainda que muitos destes pintores tenham realizado obras superiores nas cortes de França e de Espanha onde foram mestres e professores. As cidades capitais do movimento de pintura toscana foram Milão e Siena, tal como é referido no texto. No entanto, Roma e Pisa (entre outras) são também origem das pinturas reproduzidas, cidades nas quais os príncipes, arcebispos e os papas promoviam e conservavam estas obras de arte. Hoje em dia esta colecção de estampas tem um valor acrescido como sendo a única fonte do conhecimento de algumas obras perdidas, ignoradas ou extraviadas, das quais se conhece somente as gravuras aqui reproduzidas (como parece ser o caso de Narciso al Fonte do Pintor Benedeto Luti).
