VI. 50-51. paucae adeo Cereris vittas contingere dignae, quarum non timeat -pater oscula. Juvenal is talking about the purity of the mouth (cf., on the oscula, FRIEDLANDER'S note), and therefore HOUSMAN, with unassailable logic, questioned the presence of the Cereris vittas in the context: in this, he was preceded by FRIEDLANDER, who (cf. his note on 50-51) found the mention of the vittas not easy to explain. After apparently rejecting his own infelicitous conjecture teretis vittas, HOUSMAN proposed (p. XLVI of the second edition of his Juvenal) Cereris fetus, which is conceptually much better. Leur présence a excité la fantaisie des commentateurs, qui ont pensé aux arcuballistae (GESNER) et même à une fonction symbolique du mot arcus dans ce passage horatien (allusion aux armes de Cupide de la part du poète: cf. Kiessling-Heinze, ad 1., où cette théorie est rejetée avec raison). Ceux qui voudraient défendre la lectio tradita doivent sen remettre au scoliaste de Y Oxoniensis, comme le fait dernièrement Tescari, sur les traces de Orelli-Hirschjelder: «per gli archi non cé che da accettare linterpretazione del cod. Reg., cioè che servissero ad atterrire eventuali oppositori» (quibus janitores terrerent): mais Bentley a démoli une telle tentative de défense, en observant que «the oppositae fores would hâve protected the porter».
