VI. 50-51. paucae adeo Cereris vittas contingere dignae, quarum non timeat -pater oscula. Juvenal is talking about the purity of the mouth (cf., on the oscula, FRIEDLANDER'S note), and therefore HOUSMAN, with unassailable logic, questioned the presence of the Cereris vittas in the context: in this, he was preceded by FRIEDLANDER, who (cf. his note on 50-51) found the mention of the vittas not easy to explain. After apparently rejecting his own infelicitous conjecture teretis vittas, HOUSMAN proposed (p. XLVI of the second edition of his Juvenal) Cereris fetus, which is conceptually much better.
