The almost total effacing of intention in these photographs lets other things appear-as if by imposition-in the glacial mist or the pastel intoxicated by altitude: a form of nature in which texture and matter take on the aspect of puzzles, fractals, the interweaving of crystals and of gypsum. These ups and downs of mute logic and unthought-of mirror-games have laid down their principles for the composition of a book, reinforcing this choice by using over-aged rolls of film whose texture, matured by the coldness of wintry mountains, has worked alone, with its specifically intimate process. Since the image has been captured in this form of withdrawal, its pictorial force comes across as a natural element: a contemplated, integral secret. In the valleys, from the high summits that surround Zermatt, the gigantic movement of the glacier is frozen, like an irreversible snapshot. Né d'une rencontre entre le photographe Thomas Gizolme et le chercheur en géophysique Alexandre Schubnel, cet ouvrage, au croisement entre art et sciences, interroge le regard photographique.Pénétrer au coeur du manteau terrestre et voir ce qui se passe lors d'un séisme : fusion, dilatation, fragmentation, explosion, sous l'effe…t de la chaleur les roches se métamorphosent et révèlent leurs mystères. Afin de comprendre et donc d'anticiper ces drames que sont les tremblements de terre et les tsunamis, le laboratoire de géologie de l'École normale supérieure de Paris reproduit ces phénomènes physiques en vase clos. À cet effet, une machine a été élaborée pour recréer la libération d'énergie exercée par des roches portées à très haute température et un appareil photographique a été imaginé pour prendre des images lors de ces expériences de fusion de la matière. Destinées aux chercheurs, ces photographies donnent à voir un monde inconnu : à des centaines de kilomètres sous nos pieds existent des paysages fantastiques. L'oeil pénètre par effraction dans la matière, immergé dans l'infiniment petit, à l'échelle atomique du nano (le milliardième).
