Il largo successo di questa pubblicazione ebbe una grande influenza nella diffusione e nello sviluppo dell'alpinismo'' (Garimoldi n. 46). La seconda serie è in prima edizione, mentre la prima, pur recando l'anno 1859, ha l'indicazione ''fourth edition'' (ma, come avverte lo stesso Perret al n. 66, le edizioni seconda-quarta apparvero a distanza di qualche mese dall'originale). Sono complete del ricco corredo illustrativo formato complessivamente da gran numero di vignette, 23 carte topografiche delle Alpi a colori f.t., alcune più volte ripieg., 8 vedute in cromolitografia e 12 in silografia f.t. Assieme raro e ricercato (alla completezza di tutto il pubblicato manca solo il vol. della terza serie pubblicato nel 1932): ''one of the most famous titles in mountaineering literature'' (Neate). Contengono vari significativi contributi dei pionieri dell'alpinismo, da Ball a Tyndall, da Kennedy a Whymper, da Mathews a Whitwall, e altri. In ottimo stato, con usuali fioriture.
